So here\u2019s a fun fact: Nintendo turns 136 years old today, Sept. 23.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 1889, there were no video games, let alone Mario, Link or Tetris. But that was the year that Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai, a shop that hand-crafted \u201chanafuda\u201d playing cards in Kyoto, Japan.<\/p>\n

These \u201cflower cards,\u201d used to play a matching and memory game, were decorated with seasonal images like cherry blossoms, maple leaves, and cranes. With gambling tightly regulated in 19th-century Japan, hanafuda offered a legal form of gaming, making Nintendo a household name long before video games existed.<\/p>\n

Over time, Nintendo transformed itself again and again \u2014 from cards to toys, from arcade games to home consoles, from handhelds to Switch. That adaptability turned a small family business into one of the most influential entertainment companies in the world.<\/p>\n
