{"id":8201,"date":"2025-08-19T00:05:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T00:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/8201\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T00:05:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T00:05:11","slug":"galway-labour-councillors-back-catherine-connollys-aras-bid-despite-bitter-row-that-led-to-party-exit-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/8201\/","title":{"rendered":"Galway Labour councillors back Catherine Connolly\u2019s \u00c1ras bid despite bitter row that led to party exit \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/labour-party\/\">Labour Party<\/a> representatives and members in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway-west-constituency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway-west-constituency\/\">Galway West<\/a> look set to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a>\u2019s presidential campaign, notwithstanding the controversies surrounding her decision to leave the party 18 years ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Independent presidential candidate  ceased to be a Labour member in 2007 after the party refused to add her to the ticket for that year\u2019s general election alongside sitting party TD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-d-higgins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-d-higgins\/\">Michael D Higgins<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It led to a bitter row between her and members of the party in Galway West that lingered for years. She has been an outspoken critic of Labour since leaving it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All three Galway City councillors have said they support Ms Connolly as a united left candidate, although one has said he will not be actively canvassing for her in the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During the party\u2019s internal debate on whether or not to back Ms Connolly, its strategists were aware that there remained a coolness between Ms Connolly and her former colleagues in Galway West. Labour\u2019s general secretary Billie Sparks travelled to Galway and spoke to the three local councillors there to gauge their response to a party endorsement of Ms Connolly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Long-standing councillor John McDonagh said he would be supporting Ms Connolly and canvassing for her. \u201cI would hope we have a clear choice between a left-wing candidate and a centre-right candidate from the established parties. I think Catherine would make a good candidate for that,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Outlining the circumstances of the split, he said Labour was a growing party at the time, there were different viewpoints and there was competition within the party locally. He said that some people in Labour did not get on with Ms Connolly as well as others did. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cllr Helen Ogbu, who joined the party after Ms Connolly\u2019s departure, said she had no hesitation in backing her and had been particularly impressed by her positions on equality and women, as well as her activism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cllr N\u00edall McNelis said he supported Labour\u2019s decision to endorse her.
