Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> has said Europe is not \u201cgoing to hell\u201d and has denied that Ireland has \u201copen borders\u201d after US president Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s address at the UN General Assembly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During his speech, Mr Trump accused leaders, particularly in Europe, of \u201cdestroying\u201d their countries by allowing \u201cuncontrolled\u201d immigration, saying: \u201cYour countries are going to hell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters in New York City afterwards, Mr Martin said there was \u201cnothing surprising\u201d in the US president\u2019s address.<\/p>\n

While Europe has \u201cchallenges like everybody else\u201d, he described it as a \u201cbastion of good-quality living\u201d and one of the most lucrative single markets in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I wouldn\u2019t necessarily agree with that perspective that Europe is going to hell. It\u2019s not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The US president told global leaders it is time to end the \u201cfailed experiment\u201d of open borders, and uncontrolled immigration was \u201cdestroying\u201d their countries.<\/p>\n

The Taoiseach said he disagreed with Mr Trump\u2019s views, adding that neither Europe nor Ireland has open borders.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe control our borders,\u201d Mr Martin said, though he acknowledged that procedures and processes in place for those who seek asylum in Ireland must be improved in terms of \u201cfirmness\u201d and timelines.<\/p>\n

Mr Martin also disputed the US president\u2019s comments in which he described renewable energy as a \u201cscam\u201d and climate change as \u201cthe greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Taoiseach said the approach taken by Europe and Ireland in response to climate change is science-based, adding that renewable energy has been \u201cvery impactful\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added Ireland must push for greater energy independence, saying renewables such as offshore wind, which he said will be a \u201cgame-changer\u201d for Ireland, give the country the chance to do that.<\/p>\n

Responding separately to Mr Trump\u2019s comments in which he said recognising Palestine as a state would be a \u201creward\u201d for Hamas, Mr Martin said recognition of the state of Palestine is a right, and \u201cnot a reward\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Martin separately added he found US health secretary Robert F Kennedy\u2019s views on autism \u201cconcerning\u201d, saying recent comments claiming there to be a link between paracetamol use during pregnancy and autism<\/a> have \u201cno evidence base\u201d.<\/p>\n

Regardless of Mr Trump\u2019s views, Mr Martin said he respected the democratic choice of the American people in electing him, though acknowledged without the US on board with issues such as climate change, \u201cit limits what can be achieved globally\u201d.<\/p>\n
