He also accused Russian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> of seeking to expand his war beyond Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cStopping Russia now is cheaper than wondering who will be the first to create a simple drone carrying a nuclear warhead,\u201d he told the 193-member UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">His comments came a day after he met US  president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> at the UN, where Mr Trump appeared to take a much tougher stance toward the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Trump said on Tuesday that Kyiv could retake all its occupied land from Russia in what would be an extraordinary battlefield reversal. He also endorsed the idea of shooting down Russian fighter jets that violate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation-nato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation-nato\/\">Nato<\/a> airspace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Kremlin on Wednesday rejected the central arguments for Mr Trump\u2019s rhetorical U-turn, saying it would provide the US with \u201creal information\u201d on what was happening on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs far as we understand, president Trump\u2019s statements were made after communicating with Zelenskiy and, apparently, under the influence of a vision set out by Zelenskiy. Photograph: David Dee Delgado\/Bloomberg <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Later on Wednesday, Mr Zelenskiy told the UN General Assembly that the advent of artificial intelligence meant the arms race under way was the \u201cmost destructive\u201d in human history and voiced disappointment in what he said was the weakness of international law and co-operation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ukraine has been locked in fighting against Russian forces for more than three and a half years since their full-scale invasion triggered the biggest conflict in Europe since the second World War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Western support has been vital for Kyiv, but the future of that assistance has been uncertain as Mr Trump has declined to impose powerful sanctions on Russia or provide fresh military assistance beyond selling arms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump has talked up the need for Europe to take on more of the burden of supporting Kyiv and, despite his sudden shift in language, there is no sign for now that the US president has stepped up actual support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">US secretary of state Marco Rubio met Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov in New York on Wednesday for talks that lasted  about 50 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Rubio reiterated Mr Trump\u2019s call for Moscow to take meaningful steps to end the war in Ukraine, the US state department said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a sign of how Kyiv is pitching its technology and experience from the war to shore up fragile relations with its foreign partners, Mr Zelenskiy said Ukraine had decided to begin exporting its weapons to allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Zelenskiy said the modern era meant that having powerful friends was essential, but that, \u201cIf a nation wants peace, it still has to work on weapons. It\u2019s sick \u2013 but that\u2019s the reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ukraine has had tough restrictions on the export of its military products to prevent technology falling into the hands of its enemies, but it is now moving to relax them, in cases when its own stocks are covered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou don\u2019t need to start this race from scratch. We\u2019re ready to share what has already proven itself,\u201d Mr Zelenskiy told the United Nations, referring to Ukrainian defence production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are ready to make our modern weapons become your modern security. We have decided to open up arms export.
