Gary Hutch was at that time a senior member of the Kinahan cartel – but he had fallen foul of his boss Daniel Kinahan, who he had tried to have killed the previous year. Gary Hutch facilitated the attempt to kill Kinahan that instead saw the wrong man shot and injured – innocent boxer Jamie Moore.

Gary Hutch in 2015. Photo: Mick O’Neill

Despite reaching a financial settlement with the Hutches, Kinahan ordered gunman James Quinn to shoot and kill Gary in September 2015. That killing sparked the ire of the Hutch mob – which began plotting its revenge against Kinahan. In the meantime, the Kinahans attempted and failed to kill ‘The Monk’ at a bar in Lanzarote that December.

Following that attempt, senior members of the Hutch mob organised the hit at the Regency – in a brazen attempt to murder Daniel Kinahan during a boxing weigh-in event. Hutch gang members – dressed as fake ERU Gardaí and armed with AK47 rifles – stormed the crowded event and failed to locate Kinahan, instead shooting dead his senior lieutenant, David Byrne, in the reception area of the hotel.

A gunman dressed in drag and another gunman wearing a ‘Flat Cap’ were also involved in the hit – with the latter being identified as the now deceased Kevin Murray. The gunman in drag was accused of being Gary Hutch’s brother Patrick – who was charged and went on trial before the Special Criminal Court.

However, that massive trial sensationally collapsed in 2019 when lead investigator Detective Chief Superintendent Colm Fox took his own life in tragic circumstances at Ballymun Garda Station. Patrick Hutch, who denied being the gunman, walked free – and subsequently kept his head down amid threats to his life.

24/09/’25 Derek ‘Delboy’ Hutch (right)(Image: Colin Keegan, Collins, Dublin)24/09/’25 Derek ‘Delboy’ Hutch, brother of murder victim Gary Hutch, leaving Glasnevin Cemetery as a pillion passenger on an electric bicycle after visiting Gary’s grave on the 10th anniversary of his death in Spain(Image: Colin Keegan, Collins, Dublin)

During the 2023 trial of Gerry Hutch – who was ultimately acquitted of the murder of the murder of David Byrne – the Special Criminal Court heard evidence that Gary Hutch’s father Patsy may have planned the Regency Hotel shooting itself.

After finding his brother Gerry not guilty of Byrne’s murder, respected Judge Tara Burns told the Special Criminal Court that “a reasonable possibility arises on the evidence that the Regency was planned by Patsy Hutch and that Gerard Hutch stepped in, as head of the family, to attempt to sort out the aftermath”.

Patsy Hutch seen walking around the city centre(Image: Mick O’Neill)

Ms Justice Burns also went further in her scathing judgement, saying that the court was satisfied that Patsy, who is not charged with any offence, “was centrally involved” in the movement of the three AK47 rifles that were used in the Regency, when they were given to IRA man Shane Rowan on March 9, 2016.

However, since then it has emerged that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) indicated to Gardaí that no further charges were going to be brought in connection with the Regency Hotel killing.
