Right across the road is another landmark in the form of the huge castellated house, Rathfarnham Castle, the 16th-century seat of the Loftus family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">These days, a row of terraced houses on a quiet laneway flanks one side of the bright yellow landmark, and 16 Saint Mary\u2019s Terrace is one of them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The sitting room, with open fire\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/fc53f272-5b75-422c-88b4-973a21b6485b.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" data-testid=\"article-image\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_caption1 indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_regular indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0 indo-1d70522a_marginleft0 indo-1d70522a_marginright0 indo-1d70522a_margintop3 indo-b48c4984_left\" style=\"color:var(--color-grey-60)\">The sitting room, with open fire<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Built circa 1920, the three-bedroom home was bought in 2020 by Alistair Veltom, who works in IT and comes from Greystones, and his wife, occupational therapist, Emma Fox, from Raheny. \u201cWe\u2019d actually never been to Rathfarnham before we came to view it,\u201d says Fox. \u201cWe wanted a house with character and we looked all over Dublin before we settled on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The 1,034 sq ft home was in relatively good condition, and required no structural work. A ground floor extension had been added in 1995 which almost doubled it in size, adding a downstairs bedroom which they use as an office, a bathroom, a kitchen and a utility room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t have a huge amount of work to do, but we did insulate the attic,\u201d says Fox. \u201cBesides that, it was mostly interior design, painting the walls and replacing floors. A door on the left here leads to the front sitting room, which has pale grey walls, a grey carpet and a green L-shaped couch. There\u2019s a cast iron Victorian chimney piece in the corner, which is one four originals in the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIt\u2019s where we relax at the end of the day when the kids are in bed. In the winter, we\u2019ll light a roaring fire and sit in front of it,\u201d says Fox.\u201cThe fireplaces are all in working order and we use them throughout the winter,\u201d adds Veltom. \u201cAll of the doors in the house have ivory handles and are also original, as is the flush in the upstairs bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Further down the hallway is the entrance to another reception room. It was previously used as a dining room, but is now a living room. The walls here are white, with a feature wall of blue on one side. The couple installed a herringbone wooden floor and a white radiator cover. Along the way, we picked up pieces of Asian-style furniture and art, which we\u2019ve used throughout the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">This is where they entertain when the occasion arises. \u201cIt\u2019s not a massive house but because of the way it\u2019s laid out, there\u2019s plenty of space for hosting. The family room, for example, has a glass window and door which opens on to the kitchen and dining area, and there\u2019s a glass roof above the dining table. \u201cIt\u2019s a lovely spot at any time of year as it\u2019s always bright,\u201d says Fox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In the kitchen, they installed new appliances and painted the cupboards white and pale grey to match the walls. Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms, one of which spans the front of the building. The upstairs bathroom has wooden floors, green walls, white bathroom units and a bathtub.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Even the bathroom comes with an open fire\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2cfb950f-f08d-42a6-936e-72dc54a5de4b.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" data-testid=\"article-image\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_caption1 indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_regular indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0 indo-1d70522a_marginleft0 indo-1d70522a_marginright0 indo-1d70522a_margintop3 indo-b48c4984_left\" style=\"color:var(--color-grey-60)\">Even the bathroom comes with an open fire<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Despite being extended, there\u2019s a small outdoor space with room for furniture and a barbecue at the back. \u201cEven though it faces north, it gets the sun most of the day and we\u2019ve positioned the furniture there to take advantage of the light,\u201d says Fox. \u201cYou don\u2019t really need a big garden because of the location of the house, which is just across the road from the grounds of Rathfarnham Castle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Located right beside Rathfarnham Village, it\u2019s also a two-minute walk from a bus stop, offering easy access to the city centre. Rathfarnham and Nutgrove shopping centres are both a five-minute drive away. \u201cRathfarnham has expanded so much that it\u2019s rare to find somewhere like this which is smack bang in the middle of the village and has access to all amenities,\u201d says Veltom.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rear courtyard\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/86ee89da-87d6-4777-8895-13ca7b43e295.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" data-testid=\"article-image\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_caption1 indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_regular indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0 indo-1d70522a_marginleft0 indo-1d70522a_marginright0 indo-1d70522a_margintop3 indo-b48c4984_left\" style=\"color:var(--color-grey-60)\">Rear courtyard<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Shortly after they moved in, Fox became pregnant with their daughter Noa, who\u2019s now four.
