An Irish woman has reportedly been strangled to death with a vacuum cord in her Spanish apartment<\/a>. The woman, who has been named locally by reputable Spanish media outlet ‘The Olive Press’ as Catherine Peckham (66), is reportedly originally from Co Cork<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reports say Catherine was found strangled to death in her apartment in Benidorm <\/a>– and that a woman known to her, who she had allegedly invited into her home, called a friend to say she had killed her on the night of September 17.<\/p>\n

The woman who called police is a 63-year-old British resident and was arrested on suspicion of murder<\/a>, after the friend raised the alarm, according to reports.<\/p>\n

The shocking incident took place at the woman’s flat in the Rinc\u00f3n de Loix district of Benidorm – which is home to many British and Irish expats<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The suspect has been remanded into custody without bail and has reportedly so far refused to give a statement to police. It is reported that she had moved in with the Irish woman just four days earlier – after being offered a place to stay.<\/p>\n

An alleged altercation resulted in the British suspect allegedly phoning a friend to confess what happened and ask for advice. The friend advised the woman to hand herself in and also contacted emergency services.<\/p>\n

When police arrived at the apartment, they found Catherine Peckham deceased with the cable still wrapped around her neck. The suspect was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n

This paper has contacted the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs<\/a> which has yet to respond to our query.<\/p>\n
