As a result, they&#8217;re showing up in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/inflammatory-bowel-disease-feces-found-with-alarming-levels-of-microplastics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poop<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-now-have-shocking-evidence-that-microplastic-particles-can-cross-the-placenta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">placentas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-confirm-microplastics-now-detected-in-human-testicles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reproductive organs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/microplastics-could-accumulate-in-our-brains-more-than-in-kidneys-and-livers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now these fossil-fuel-derived particles, less than 5 mm in size, have been found deep within our bones.<\/p>\n<p>A new review of 62 studies suggests microplastics and smaller nanoplastics are impacting our skeletal health in multiple ways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-reveals-the-shocking-amount-of-plastic-we-breathe-in-every-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Study Reveals The Shocking Amount of Plastic We Breathe in Every Day<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A significant body of research suggests that microplastics can reach deep into bone tissue, such as bone marrow, and potentially cause disturbances in its metabolism,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2025-09-microplastics-linked-impaired-bone-health.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> medical scientist Rodrigo Bueno de Oliveira at the State University of Campinas in Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DiagramOfMicroplasticSources.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram showing some of the different sources of microplastics including clothing, paint and tyres\" width=\"1872\" height=\"1054\" class=\"wp-image-175012 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Sources of microplastic. Int., 2025<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.envint.2025.109316\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> in humans found these plastic leftovers accumulating in bone tissues via the blood, following ingestion. There, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/tox.24182\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">animal studies<\/a> show they can reduce bone growth.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, disruptions in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osteoclast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">osteoclasts<\/a> \u2013 cells that support bone growth and repair \u2013 can lead to weakened bone structures, making these compromised bones more susceptible to deformities and fractures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In vitro studies with bone tissue cells have shown that microplastics impair cell viability, accelerate cell aging, and alter cell differentiation, in addition to promoting inflammation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2025-09-microplastics-linked-impaired-bone-health.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Bueno de Oliveira.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The adverse effects observed culminated, worryingly, in the interruption of the animals&#8217; skeletal growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/400xMicrographShowingBlueMicroplasticsInCell.jpg\" alt=\"Blue highlighted microplastics crammed into a bone cell\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1151\" class=\"wp-image-175016 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Interior of an MG-63 bone cell magnified 400x with microplastic spheres highlighted in blue and the cell nucleus in red. (Mariana Cassani de Oliveira\/LEMON\/FCM-UNICAMP)<\/p>\n<p>While this may not translate to human bones, there is an increasing global prevalence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osteoporosis.foundation\/health-professionals\/about-osteoporosis\/epidemiology#:~:text=375%2D82.-,.,646%2D50.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">osteoporosis<\/a>, a condition where bones become more brittle and prone to fractures. Researchers suspect that microplastics may be a contributing factor, along with other established risks like drinking and an aging population.<\/p>\n<p>Yet still, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/plastics-impact-on-health-costs-1-5-trillion-every-year-report-warns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experts warn,<\/a> we&#8217;re increasing this &#8220;underrecognized danger,&#8221; producing at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pl\/node\/71013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">400 million metric tons<\/a> (441 million US tons) of plastic each year, a process contributing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/climate-issues\/plastics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1.8 billion metric tons<\/a> of greenhouse gases per annum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/toxicologists-urge-for-research-into-the-unknown-health-risks-of-microplastic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">For years now<\/a>, researchers have been calling for more resources to investigate the impacts these <a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2019\/08\/how-plastics-contribute-to-climate-change\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">problematic petrochemical pollutants<\/a> are having on our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, we can somewhat reduce our exposure to microplastics by filtering our drinking water and limiting plastic products, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www-sciencealert-com.webpkgcache.com\/doc\/-\/s\/www.sciencealert.com\/microplastics-from-synthetic-clothes-are-polluting-land-even-more-than-water\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">synthetic clothing<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bottled-water-is-packed-full-of-up-to-100x-more-microplastic-than-expected\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plastic drink bottles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This research was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00198-025-07580-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Osteoporosis International<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Microplastics are now so ubiquitous we&#8217;re drinking, eating, and inhaling them.
