I loved all the different instrumentation on the album. What did you want the sound of this album to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the songs with Anderson especially, he\u2019s got his own vibe and style\u2014but when we worked together, we did this retro \u201970s thing, which he\u2019s so good at it. We did some more uptempo songs, like \u201cI Won\u2019t Allow It,\u201d and I did a lot of ballads with other people, too. I really love the ballads, like \u201cHere for it All\u201d and \u201cNothing Is Impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n

What was your process like in the studio? Do you have certain must-haves when you\u2019re preparing to record?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It depends on who I\u2019m working with, or what the song and vibe is. It\u2019s different if it\u2019s a bop or a ballad. It\u2019s hard to say, like, \u201cI needed great honey juice.\u201d I didn\u2019t have one specific thing.<\/p>\n

Were you spending a lot of time on each song, or did you bang out tracks pretty quickly?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If I\u2019m starting out and I have an idea, I\u2019ll just go to my notes, and sing my little idea into the notes. But it’s not always like that. Sometimes, if I\u2019m collaborating with someone\u2014which is my favorite thing to do\u2014I\u2019ll vibe with them. If they\u2019re a piano or guitar player, they\u2019ll play, and then I\u2019ll write some lyrics and go from there.<\/p>\n

Did you have any other favorite collaborators on this album?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I loved working with Daniel Moore. He\u2019s my musical director and he\u2019s an incredible piano player. We worked on a couple of songs, like \u201cNothing Is Impossible.\u201d Actually, I played that for Debbie Allen when she came to my house, and she really loved it. It was not done yet, but she\u2019s the first person who heard it. Daniel and I also did \u201cHere for it All,\u201d and it\u2019s definitely one of my favorites from this album.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s chat about some of the songs. I love the opener, \u201cMi.\u201d To me, that was a song about prioritizing yourself and not seeing that as a selfish thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s tongue-in-cheek. This new era is all about me\u2014thank you, and goodnight!<\/p>\n

I love that. I\u2019m going to follow that for myself going forward.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Follow that era! Channel it.<\/p>\n
