{"id":87300,"date":"2025-09-26T19:12:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T19:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/87300\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T19:12:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T19:12:15","slug":"the-traitors-is-main-chat-over-pints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/87300\/","title":{"rendered":"The Traitors is \u2018main chat over pints\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The winners of The Traitors Ireland, the hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\">RT\u00c9<\/a> reality TV show, may be \u201ctraitor slayers\u201d Vanessa Ogbonna, Kelley Higgins and Oyin Adeyemi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">But host venue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/slane-castle\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/slane-castle\/\">Slane Castle<\/a> and the surrounding area in Co Meath have proven to be another star of the show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Local people want to capitalise on the popularity of the show and hope to reap the rewards of having had the popular traitors \u2013 and faithfuls \u2013 staying in their midst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIt absolutely has to be good for Slane,\u201d said Meath County Council Cathaoirleach Wayne Harding, whose family run the Village Inn there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Harding said the programme had \u201creplaced football as the main chat over pints at the bar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEveryone was commenting on how well Slane looked, so it really has put the village on the map again for a tourist destination and not only as a rock concert venue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the council headquarters all the talk among staff was about whether \u201cany of the contestants were staying in the village or if I had met Paudie\u201d, he said of the popular contestant, the 68-year-old retired prison officer Paudie Moloney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt really got the country\u2019s attention and it\u2019s a bit early to say, but I\u2019d bet visitor numbers will be up in the coming months because of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The Traitors' flag files outside Slane Castle, where the hit television series was filmed. Photograph: Andres Poveda\/RT\u00c9 <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Slane Castle has introduced tours for the show\u2019s fans, including a visit to \u201cthe conclave\u201d where traitors deliberated on which faithful they would \u201cmurder\u201d on episodes. It is situated in dungeons not previously opened for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Filming the series in March created special memories for the castle\u2019s owner Alex Conyngham of his late father <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/henry-mountcharles\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/henry-mountcharles\/\">Henry Mount Charles<\/a>, who had marvelled at the interior renovations for the show just three months before he died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe walked around the castle and was just amazed at the sets, especially the round table,\u201d Mr Conyngham said of the decorative wooden table where contestants met nightly to try to weed out a traitor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe castle was full of more electrical cables than for a Slane gig with all the cameras and lighting everywhere, and Dad was just delighted how they reinvented the interiors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The dungeon used to be a keg store for the castle\u2019s one-time nightclub and was boarded until it was used for the conclave\u2019s late-night \u201cscenes of treachery and murder\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible space \u2013 completely silent and pitch dark, so it\u2019s perfect for secret scheming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was important to Mr Conyngham and his family that the whole village of Slane and not just the castle reaped any benefits from the hit series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019ve definitely noticed more people stopping at the gates of the castle and taking pictures and the hits on our website and calls to Rock Farm have also increased,\u201d he said, referring to the castle\u2019s organic farm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Alex Conyngham at Slane Castle, the location for The Traitors Ireland.
