Photograph: Alan Betson <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Charles-Rose Greenhart (31) and their partner Raine Greenhart (29) moved from Seattle in the US to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> in April and are enrolled in an intensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-language\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-language\/\">Irish-language<\/a> course. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Charles-Rose was adopted by American parents from Nicaragua and grew up in a tiny fishing village island called North Haven in Maine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI had a graduating class of eight, and we were a very big class. One to three is the usual maximum \u2013 three of the students in my year were my cousins.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Raine is originally from Los Gatos in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/california\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/california\/\">California<\/a>. \u201cWe met in Seattle after the pandemic once we both had had our vaccinations,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The couple\u2019s move to Dublin was prompted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=trump+irish+times&amp;rlz=1C1GCEA_en-GBIE1180IE1180&amp;oq=trump+irish+times&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIKCAEQABgKGBYYHjIICAIQABgWGB4yCggDEAAYChgWGB4yCAgEEAAYFhgeMgoIBRAAGAoYFhgeMggIBhAAGBYYHjIICAcQABgWGB4yCggIEAAYChgWGB4yCggJEAAYChgWGB7SAQgzMzU1ajBqN6gCALACAA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=trump+irish+times&amp;rlz=1C1GCEA_en-GBIE1180IE1180&amp;oq=trump+irish+times&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIKCAEQABgKGBYYHjIICAIQABgWGB4yCggDEAAYChgWGB4yCAgEEAAYFhgeMgoIBRAAGAoYFhgeMggIBhAAGBYYHjIICAcQABgWGB4yCggIEAAYChgWGB4yCggJEAAYChgWGB7SAQgzMzU1ajBqN6gCALACAA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">Trump<\/a>\u2019s victory in the presidential election last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Charles-Rose says: \u201cWe were looking at different places but Ireland was definitely top on that list, and thankfully my wife was able to get a transfer from work to their Irish branch.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe both wanted to learn Irish as soon as we learned that we were going to move to Ireland because we thought that it would be a wonderful thing to do in general, and it\u2019s a good way to learn more about Ireland and to feel a bit more at home here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Charles-Rose has not found learning Irish from scratch with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conradh-na-gaeilge\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conradh-na-gaeilge\/\">Conradh na Gaeilge<\/a> too challenging. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIrish is not the most difficult language that I have ever tried to learn. It makes sense grammatically. They only began learning English when Charles-Rose was adopted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have lived in Italy and Korea and I have learned a bit of Japanese and a few other things. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Varya Fadieieva (28) moved from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\">Ukraine<\/a> to Ireland in the aftermath of the Russian invasion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI stayed in Kyiv for the first nine months of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but then winter came and that was quite tough,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Fadieieva had a friend who had already moved to Dublin, which influenced her decision to move. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI thought that I would probably stay here for a few months but I came to love this country, its nature, people and architecture. And later I realised that I can\u2019t imagine my life now without Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Before moving she had written a science-fiction book that featured a lighthouse in Ireland. \u201cI have this feeling that God, through my art, led me here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">She describes choosing to learn Irish as an \u201cobvious\u201d decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs Ukrainians we know how it feels when your language is destroyed and banned for many, many years. I think language is so important. It\u2019s a history of the nation that\u2019s written between the lines and between the words. It\u2019s a worldview just hidden in those phrases. The way we form phrases in different languages and talk about our feelings about everything \u2013 everything is kind of coded into language.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Fadieieva\u2019s experience of learning Irish has not been straightforward. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt first I was trying to learn [Irish] by myself, which was really hard. Later I went on some courses, but I didn\u2019t learn much because although these courses say they are for beginners, most people already had some Irish. I was feeling kind of duped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI was praying to St Patrick because he somehow learned this language even without courses and teachers, but in the end I saw this advertisement from Conradh na Gaeilge. I think it was advertised in some Ukrainian groups as well as it\u2019s for people who had no Irish at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Fadieieva is taking her third Irish-language course through Conradh na Gaeilge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI feel quite lucky because now we can ask any questions we want. And sometimes there\u2019s events where we can attend to learn to sing something in Irish and use new phrases, which is cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Fadieieva feels that learning Irish will be very significant in her future in Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI would like to be a fluent Irish speaker, even just for myself. I just love how we describe things in Irish. It just feels right. I would love to give tours in Irish as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/08\/19\/a-french-woman-in-dublin-it-was-obvious-from-the-start-of-my-erasmus-that-i-was-really-happy-here-my-family-could-see-it\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A French woman in Ireland: \u2018I hope to get to a point in the next few years where I will be fully fluent in Irish but I am not there yet\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Alongside her writing, Fadieieva works as a tour guide on the Jeanie Johnston famine ship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI really love to share Irish history with people. I love the Irish art of storytelling. I would love to make more people aware of Irish history and get rid of the stereotypes about what Ireland is and who the Irish people are.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIn my writing I always use some small Irish phrases and I\u2019m trying to share Irish in as many different ways as I can. I hope that in the future, I can write something in Irish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn our Ukrainian Orthodox community here, people are interested in learning some prayers in Irish. There\u2019s lots of ways that I can use Irish once I am really good at it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ilyas Vekilov (29), from Russia<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ilyas Vekilov (29) has also been attending a Conradh na Gaeilge Irish-language course. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Vekilov describes himself as \u201cmade in Russia, matured in Turkey and imported to Ireland.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Though Russian was his first language, his family moved to Turkey when he was 14 and he quickly learned the language. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIn September 2022 I moved to Ireland for work. I was interested in learning Irish then but I never had the chance and I did not know about the resources that are available. But then I started to do more in-depth research and found Darragh\u2019s class.\u201d He is referring to Darragh Humphreys, who runs the Conradh na Gaeilge beginners\u2019 class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Vekilov\u2019s move to Dublin was prompted by a friend of his who moved to Cork for work in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI started researching Ireland and it felt like a very beautiful country with an amazing culture and rich history. I was like, you know what? I would love to live in Ireland one day. But I never actively did anything for it because I thought it would be hard for a third-world citizen to move to a country like this. And then one day I was at home drinking wine with a friend and I received a message on LinkedIn from a Google recruiter in Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/2025\/08\/23\/there-was-no-word-for-avocado-the-challenges-of-creating-the-new-irish-dictionary\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The challenges of creating the new Irish dictionary: \u2018There was no word for avocado\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That message led to Vekilov getting a job in Dublin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI remember getting off the plane, smelling the air and I was like, oh, I\u2019m home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One of the reasons he decided to learn Irish was to further immerse himself in Irish culture. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cInterestingly enough, after such a short time here I do already identify as Irish. A lot of people laugh at me for that but I do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Vekilov watches children\u2019s television shows in Irish in his spare time because he thinks that they use the cleanest and most grammatically correct language. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He is finding learning Irish difficult as \u201cI don\u2019t know any languages that are in any way similar to Irish and it doesn\u2019t have that many borrowed words.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIt\u2019s been challenging but I do love a challenge.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Misha Yerhidz\u00e9 (11), from Ukraine<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">When 11-year-old Misha Yerhidz\u00e9 from Ukraine is asked what led him to start learning Irish, he looks at his mother\u2019s partner Donal O\u2019Cathain and laughs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis one right here,\u201d Misha says, pointing at him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThat\u2019s not entirely true,\u201d says O\u2019Cathain with a laugh, adding that Misha attends a Gaelscoil. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Misha moved to west Kerry from Ukraine with his mother and sister in November 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDonal started teaching me some words that I could use in school,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Cathain adds: \u201cI suppose, we live in Baile an Fheirt\u00e9araigh so he\u2019s in an Irish-speaking area. He didn\u2019t have much English either when he arrived, so he had to pick up two languages at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Yerhidz\u00e9 believes that maths really helped him to learn Irish at school. \u201cIt\u2019s literally just going through the same thing again because I had done lots of the maths in Ukraine.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI have better Irish than most of my Ukrainian friends do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIrish is the key for my future in this country. Irish helps me speak to my Gaelic team, it helps me speak to my teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Misha plays on the local Gaelic football team. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201c[It] is a cool type of sport. It\u2019s better than rugby. I just don\u2019t like rugby, I don\u2019t want to hurt anybody. I like being in goal and saving the ball. Sometimes I get the man of the match.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In the summer the pair went to Croke Park to watch the All-Ireland football championship semi-final, where Kerry played Tyrone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTyrone got thrashed!\u201d Misha says enthusiastically. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">When asked how he feels about his new life in Ireland, he says: \u201cWell in Ireland it\u2019s more peaceful [than Ukraine].
