\n\tLuca Guadagnino<\/a> shimmered \u2014 quite literally \u2014 as he made his way to the podium on the opening night of the 63rd<\/a> annual New York Film Festival<\/a>, held Friday at Lincoln Center\u2019s Alice Tully Hall.<\/p>\n

\n\tDressed in a sequined gray suit jacket, the acclaimed director introduced his latest film, \u201cAfter the Hunt<\/a>,\u201d a psychological thriller following Alma (Julia Roberts<\/a>), a college professor who finds herself entangled in a moral and personal crisis when her prot\u00e9g\u00e9, Maggie (Ayo Edebiri), accuses Alma\u2019s close friend and colleague Hank (Andrew Garfield) of sexual assault.<\/p>\n

\n\tTaking the stage, Roberts shared a brief remark with the audience, saying, \u201cI moved to New York when I was 17 years old \u2014 and I\u2019m 57. This is top 3 great achievements of my New York life. So thank you so much for having us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter hugging Roberts, Guadagnino scurried back to the podium to quickly tell the crowd that the film was \u201cmade to make you talk about it and fight over it, and be laughing and being desperate and happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRoberts and Guadagnino were joined at the premiere by co-stars Garfield, Edebiri and Michael Stuhlbarg, along with screenwriter Nora Garrett. Among the notable guests was Julia\u2019s niece, Emma Roberts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOne of the scenes I was really looking forward to was the one where Andrew Garfield\u2019s character, Hank Gibson, confronts Julia\u2019s character, Alma, in her classroom,\u201d Garrett told\u00a0Variety\u00a0on the carpet. \u201cThat was Andrew\u2019s first day on set, and he just knocked it out of the park. I almost started crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAfter the Hunt\u201d is intentionally ambiguous, steering clear of black-and-white scenarios. Speaking about her approach to writing the film\u2019s morally complex dialogue, Garrett explained, \u201cI was an actor and so much of the acting training I got was about, \u2018You have to be on your character\u2019s side \u2014 even if they\u2019re doing things that you don\u2019t agree with. It\u2019s not about judging your character. It\u2019s about trying to find a place of commonality and work from there.\u2019 And I think I did the same thing with the dialogue \u2014 I hope.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the screening, guests made their way to Tavern on the Green for the afterparty, where they enjoyed mini lobster rolls, assorted meat skewers and fingerling potatoes.<\/p>\n

\n\tAbout an hour into the reception, Guadagnino arrived \u2014 still clad in his glittering ensemble.\u00a0<\/p>\n
