{"id":89696,"date":"2025-09-27T22:43:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T22:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/89696\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T22:43:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T22:43:09","slug":"discovery-of-vast-hydrogen-cosmic-bridge-offers-new-clues-to-galactic-evolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/89696\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery of Vast Hydrogen &#8216;Cosmic Bridge&#8217; Offers New Clues to Galactic Evolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spanning the gulf between two <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/a-secret-energy-source-once-existed-on-the-dwarf-planet-ceres-could-it-have-fueled-habitability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dwarf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/new-simulations-reveal-dozens-of-hidden-galaxies-orbiting-the-milky-way\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galaxies<\/a>, an immense strand of <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/cosmic-hydrogen-from-the-big-bang-to-cosmic-reionization\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen<\/a> gas is acting as a cosmic bridge 53 million light-years from Earth, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/discovering-australias-mysterious-lost-asteroid-impact-ancient-glass-reveals-evidence-of-a-long-hidden-event\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian<\/a> astronomers.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was made at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research\u2019s (ICRAR) node at the University of Western Australia (UWA). Stretched between the NGC 4532 and DDO 137 <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/hidden-galaxies-could-break-all-of-our-current-models-of-galactic-evolution-astronomers-say\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">galaxies<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/billion-year-old-hydrogen-factory-could-power-earth-with-green-energy-for-the-next-170000-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen<\/a> bridge measures 185,000 light-years in length, as revealed in a new paper published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.<\/p>\n<p>Mapping the Cosmos<\/p>\n<p>Named for one of Australia\u2019s most famous indigenous species, the work fell under the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Survey, or \u201cWALLABY.\u201d The WALLABY project focuses on mapping the sky to better understand how hydrogen gas is distributed between galaxies at large scales, as well as the impact of stellar and black hole feedback.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Data for the project comes from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, also known as the ASKAP radio telescope, located at the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory. The radio telescope is located in a radio-quiet zone, where transmissions in the area are heavily restricted to ensure high-quality observations that are free of local interference. Credit: Alex Cherney\/CSIRO<br \/>\nDiscovering a Galactic Bridge<\/p>\n<p>Through the WALLABY work, the ICRAR UWA researchers were able to examine high-resolution observations of neutral hydrogen. Interested in the gas\u2019s impact on the galaxy around it, the team identified immense gas formations far out in space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeutral hydrogen plays a crucial role in the formation of stars, making this finding fundamental to understanding how galaxies interact and evolve, particularly in dense environments,\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrar.org\/gas-bridge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said co-author Professor Kenji Bekki<\/a> of ICRAR UWA.<\/p>\n<p>Modeling revealed that the tidal forces between NGC 4532 and DDO 137, combined with their movement toward the Virgo cluster of galaxies, were responsible for the unusual gas dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the galaxies rotated around each other and moved toward the hot gas cloud surrounding the Virgo cluster, which was 200 times hotter than the Sun\u2019s surface, they experienced what is known as ram pressure, which stripped and heated the gas from the galaxies,\u201d explained lead author Professor Lister Staveley-Smith of ICRAR UWA. \u201cThe process is akin to atmospheric burn-up when a satellite re-enters the Earth\u2019s upper atmosphere, but has extended over a period of a billion years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two major factors\u2014the density of electrons in the region and the speed at which galaxies fall into the hot gas cloud\u2014drive the stripping process, pulling vast amounts of gas away to form the hydrogen bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Dwarf Galaxies and the Local Group<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis contributes to our broader understanding of the most massive structures in the Universe and their life cycles, which helps us grasp more about their vast complexities and history of star formation,\u201d Professor Staveley-Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/lockheed-martins-mako-the-u-s-navys-powerful-new-multi-mission-hypersonic-missile-is-officially-unveiled\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/F-35s-FA-18EFs-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"Mako\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The finding also offers insights closer to home. The connection between NGC 4532 and DDO 137 resembles that of the Magellanic System, two irregular dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way as part of the Local Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding these gas bridges and their dynamics provides critical insights into how galaxies evolve, how galactic gas is redistributed, and the varying conditions under which galaxies may or may not form stars,\u201d Professor Staveley-Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Ongoing research across such vast distances will continue to refine scientists\u2019 understanding of galactic evolution and shed light on the processes shaping our own cosmic neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnras\/article\/543\/1\/526\/8258914\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WALLABY Pilot Survey: The Extensive Interaction of NGC 4532 and DDO 137 with the Virgo Cluster<\/a>,\u201d appeared in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on September 23, 2025.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ryan Whalen covers science and technology for The Debrief.
