{"id":90756,"date":"2025-09-28T12:39:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T12:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/90756\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T12:39:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T12:39:07","slug":"sweeping-un-sanctions-reimposed-on-iran-over-its-atomic-programme-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/90756\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweeping UN sanctions reimposed on Iran over its atomic programme \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-nations-un\/\">UN<\/a> economic and military sanctions have been reimposed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a> over its atomic programme, a decade after they were lifted in a landmark international deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">France, Germany and the United Kingdom triggered snapback 30 days ago for Iran further restricting monitoring of its nuclear programme and the deadlock over its negotiations with the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The three European nations on Sunday said they \u201ccontinuously made every effort to avoid triggering snapback\u201d, but Iran \u201chas not authorised IAEA [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-atomic-energy-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-atomic-energy-agency\/\">International Atomic Energy Agency<\/a>] inspectors to regain access to Iran\u2019s nuclear sites, nor has it produced and transmitted to the IAEA a report accounting for its stockpile of high-enriched uranium\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The nations also noted Iran enriches uranium at a level that no other peaceful programme does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The sanctions again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with Tehran and penalise any development of Iran\u2019s ballistic missile programme, among other measures. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It came through a mechanism known as \u201csnapback\u201d, included in Iran\u2019s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, and comes as Iran\u2019s economy already is reeling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Iranian politician Ismail Kowsari said parliament will discuss withdrawing from the nuclear treaty. \u201cParliament will discuss this issue &#8230; and decide on it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued his own warning to those who would honour the UN sanctions as parliament began meeting on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe announce that if any country wants to take action against Iran based on these illegal resolutions, it will face serious reciprocal action from Iran, and the three European countries that are the initiators of this illegal action will also face our reaction,\u201d he said, according to a report by the state-run IRNA news agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iran further withdrew from the IAEA monitoring after Israel\u2019s war with the country in June that also saw the US strike nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, the country still maintains a stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60 per cent purity \u2013 a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90 per cent \u2013 that is largely enough to make several atomic bombs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iran has long insisted its nuclear programme is peaceful, though the West and IAEA say Tehran had an organised weapons programme until 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Asked if Iran\u2019s withdrawal from the treaty means moving towards building the bomb, Mr Kowsari said: \u201cNo, it does not mean that.
