Her name has been immortalised in escapades of pillaging and plunder that followed. Pictures: Jed Niezgoda<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The couple promptly made their purchase, and it was upon Lizette\u2019s award-winning practice that the new owners\u2019 gaze next fell, as they engaged the team to create and deliver a design solution that modernised their acquisition and made the most of its potential.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799223_5_articleinlinemobile_jedniezgoda.com_CWA_119_20HOC_20Street_20Kinsale_15_High_20Res_1_.jpg\" alt=\"There's a linen cupboard on the landing at the top of the stairs. \" title=\"There's a linen cupboard on the landing at the top of the stairs. \" class=\"card-img\"\/>There&#8217;s a linen cupboard on the landing at the top of the stairs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The setting informed the vision, says Lizette. As the residence is located in a conservation area in the heart of Kinsale, the renovation and extension aimed to keep as much of the character of the original house as possible, but also introduce contemporary elements, to maximise natural daylight. \u201cThe original character was retained by replacing the sash windows of the old terrace and adding a new sash window on the end gable, to provide more daylight and views to the master bedroom suite,\u201d says the architect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Accommodation on the refurbished ground floor includes a new guest bath room, living room and cloak cupboard, whilst the new extension provides a kitchen\/dining space and a \u201chidden\u201d utility\/plant room.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799226_5_articleinlinemobile_jedniezgoda.com_CWA_119_20HOC_20Street_20Kinsale_03_High_20Res_1_.jpg\" alt=\"The extended and renovated Kinsale end-of-terrace residence blends the property's indoor and outdoor space.\" title=\"The extended and renovated Kinsale end-of-terrace residence blends the property's indoor and outdoor space.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>The extended and renovated Kinsale end-of-terrace residence blends the property&#8217;s indoor and outdoor space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The ground-floor accommodation also includes a snug room, open-plan kitchen\/dining area, utility room, powder room and cloak cupboard, while the first-floor accommodation includes a main bedroom with en-suite and another guest bedroom with storage on the landing. \u201cThe refurbishment of the existing first-floor intervention allowed for a guest bedroom and master bedroom with an adjoining en-suite, and a linen cupboard at the top landing of the staircase,\u201d says Lizette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The clients bought the property in 2019, and work started that summer. Now the property\u2019s footprint, including the new extension, is around 84 square metres. \u201cThe scope for the project included alterations to the existing dwelling, demolition of existing single-storey extensions to the rear of the existing dwelling, construction of a new single-storey extension to the rear of the existing dwelling, together with alterations to elevations and a new roof light to the kitchen\/dining space,\u201d says Lizette.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799232_5_articleinlinemobile_jedniezgoda.com_CWA_119_20HOC_20Street_20Kinsale_11_High_20Res_1_.jpg\" alt=\"The living space.\" title=\"The living space.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>The living space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOur purpose was to demolish old extensions, refurbish the existing end-of-terrace property and extend it to maximise the available footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">THE owners and architect were keen to \u201cenhance and celebrate\u201d the historic qualities of the original dwelling by blending the original \u201cIrish cottage aesthetic\u201d with a contemporary approach, adds Lizette.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799235_5_articleinlinemobile_jedniezgoda.com_CWA_119_20HOC_20Street_20Kinsale_08_High_20Res_1_.jpg\" alt=\"A new rooflight enhances the contemporary feel of the design.\" title=\"A new rooflight enhances the contemporary feel of the design.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>A new rooflight enhances the contemporary feel of the design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Exactly how did Conneely Wessels Architects, which also coordinated the interior design, go about this? \u201cThe selection, colour and texture of materials respond to the \u2018Irish cottage aesthetic\u2019, such as wide-plank timber flooring, Kilkenny limestone and shiplap timber wall cladding, whilst the contemporary full-height glazed extension, with large roof light, lighting design, and incorporation of indirect and hidden lighting, is a more contemporary approach,\u201d says Lizette.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799238_5_articleinlinemobile_jedniezgoda.com_CWA_119_20HOC_20Street_20Kinsale_17_High_20Res_1_.jpg\" alt=\"A rooflight was added to the kitchen.\" title=\"A rooflight was added to the kitchen.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>A rooflight was added to the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The indoor-outdoor ambience is key to the home\u2019s appeal, and light floods the entire living space. \u201cThe design concept was a new single-storey extension with a raised ceiling height, to the rear of the existing house, lit by a linear roof light, bringing natural daylight deep into the plan,\u201d says Lizette. \u201cThe new extension offers an opportunity for the kitchen\/dining space to connect directly with the terrace on the outside, especially with the introduction of a full-width sliding\/folding door.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799259_5_articleinlinemobile_jedniezgoda.com_CWA_119_20HOC_20Street_20Kinsale_09_High_20Res_1_.jpg\" alt=\"Maximising storage space was a priority in this design.\" title=\"Maximising storage space was a priority in this design.\" class=\"card-img\"\/>Maximising storage space was a priority in this design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOnce the sliding\/folding door is in its open position, the inside and outside merge, due to the selection of the same floor finish \u2014 the usable space almost doubles in size, and so it is a very successful design approach.
