{"id":91422,"date":"2025-09-28T21:26:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T21:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/91422\/"},"modified":"2025-09-28T21:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T21:26:09","slug":"ballincolligs-bench-comes-good-in-late-fightback-against-duhallow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/91422\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballincollig&#8217;s bench comes good in late fightback against Duhallow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">\n             Ballincollig 1-15 (1-0-15)\u00a0Duhallow 2-11 (2-1-9)\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ballincollig may not seek quantity in terms of squad depth, but there\u2019s no doubting the quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While the Mid-Cork side opted to tog just eight subs for Sunday\u2019s McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC quarter-final against Duhallow, the four players introduced combined for six points, including the vital three to level and then overtake their opponents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A trio of Duhallow points \u2013 two for sub David O\u2019Connor, both set up by S\u00e9amus Hickey, and one Luke Murphy free \u2013 put them 2-11 to 1-12 ahead with ten minutes remaining. However, with eight of their players having lined out at club level already over the weekend, they tired and were not to score again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ballincollig did not immediately eat into the lead, though they did almost snaffle a goal when Dara Dorgan\u2019s free dropped dangerously in the goalmouth. Another effort was blocked by Duhallow\u2019s Darragh Cashman, who was excellent throughout, but Ballincollig didn\u2019t yield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Dorgan cut the deficit to a point in the first minute of injury time, then they were level as Se\u00e1n Kiely was the provider for another replacement, Se\u00e1n O\u2019Neill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799775_4_articleinlinemobile_EOHDuhallow03.jpg\" alt=\"Ballincollig's Se\u00e1n Dore is tackled by Duhallow's Conor O'Callaghan and S\u00e9amus Hickey. Picture: Eddie O&#8217;Hare<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Duhallow might have seized the victory with a late breakaway but the effort from Donncha O\u2019Connor \u2013 playing his 90th championship game for the division \u2013 tailed just wide. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While a black card for Ballincollig\u2019s Peter O\u2019Neill for an infringement during that move looked set to reduce them to 14 for the first period of the looming extra time, instead it proved to be almost meaningless \u2013 Kiely found Dorgan and he passed on to Tadhg O\u2019Connell, who fisted over the winner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There was time for one last Duhallow attack but Liam O\u2019Connell\u2019s vital challenge on Luke Murphy ensured it came to nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ballincollig had begun brightly with points from Se\u00e1n Kiely and then Darragh O\u2019Mahony, but the concession of a fifth-minute goal meant they didn\u2019t lead again for the rest of the half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There was an element of fortune to it from a Duhallow point of view as Conor O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s point attempt hit the post and bounced down \u2013 against that, Luke Murphy\u2019s sense of anticipation was rewarded as he had the easy task of netting from close range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Better was to come for the divisional side after Ballincollig captain Luke Fahy levelled. A quick and incisive move saw Gerry O\u2019Sullivan find centre-back Kevin Cremin and he in turn played in midfielder Adrian Carroll, who applied the final touch \u2013 2-0 to 0-3, eight minutes on the clock.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4799778_4_articleinlinemobile_EOHDuhallow01.jpg\" alt=\"Darragh O'Mahony gets a shot in as Duhallow's Kevin Crowley closes in. Picture: Eddie O&#8217;Hare<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Amid a strangely subdued atmosphere, the rest of the half was fairly even, with the goals allowing Duhallow a cushion. Carroll was strong at midfield while their defensive unit proved difficult for Ballincollig to break down. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The lead was six points at one stage but a purple patch for the mid-Cork side coming up to half-time saw them close to within three, the best point scored by O\u2019Mahony after a great Se\u00e1n Dore aerial win and nice build-up play from Harry Ahearne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jack Curtin made the lead four again and at the other end, Carroll got in a great block when O\u2019Leary was presented with a glimpse of goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Trailing by 2-6 to 0-8 at half-time, Ballincollig got on top in the third quarter. David O\u2019Leary, brought on for injured corner-back Shane Murphy in a move which necessitated a reshuffle in the first half, had an early point and, while that was answered by Donncha O\u2019Connor, Ballincollig were soon ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They had a penalty when O\u2019Mahony was fouled and converted from the spot himself; then Liam O\u2019Connell levelled and Luke Fahy\u2019s delivery led to O\u2019Leary palming over.
