But, the eye-watering condiment comes with some life-lengthening health benefits that are often unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Used on the Japanese dish for hundreds of years, the chartreuse-colored spice can fight harmful inflammation and even help to prevent cavities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That\u2019s because the pungent staple has antimicrobial properties, Dr. Hideki Masuda, a former research director at Ogawa and Company of Japan, previously told <a href=\"http:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=44681X1458326&amp;articleId=b2834421&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2000%2F12%2F26%2Fhealth%2Fit-works-on-sushi-it-could-help-teeth-too.html&amp;sref=\/life-style\/health-and-families\/wasabi-cavities-inflammation-spice-japan-b2834421.html\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The New York Times;elm:affiliate_link;elmt:premonetized;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said the wasabi plant contains compounds known as isothiocyanates that give it is stinging taste and stop bacteria growth.
