    Violas<\/strong> – these low-maintenance perennials thrive in fertile, well-drained soil and can be grown in full sun or partial shade.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Pansies<\/strong> – these surprisingly hardy cool-season annuals will bring a pop of colour to any garden and prefer to be grown in full sun, in well-drained soil.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Cyclamen<\/strong> – hardy varieties, such as cyclamen hederifolium, will provide a pop of late autumn colour when planted in borders and beneath your garden trees.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Trailing Ivy<\/strong> – Trailing Ivy is perfect for use as ground-cover, or when grown in containers and hanging baskets<\/a>. Perfect in both sunny spots and full shade.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Helichrysum<\/strong> – also known as the curry plant, helichrysum requires full sun and fertile soil. Its distinctly warm fragrance will add an exciting element to autumn gardens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Heather<\/strong> – this woody dwarf shrub will provide your garden with glorious autumnal and winter hues. Plump for acidic soil and regular watering to help this hardy plant thrive.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    When should you plant autumn bedding plants?<\/p>\n

    Martine Davis, founder of Balcombe Street Window Box Co<\/a>, tells Country Living: “The ideal time to plant autumn bedding is mid-late September, while the soil is still warm and the days are gradually cooling. This gives plants the best chance to establish roots before winter sets in.<\/p>\n

    “If you plant too late, say, after mid-October, you\u2019ll risk poor performance and limited growth. The goal is to get everything in while there’s still enough daylight and warmth to encourage strong root development.”<\/p>\n

    When should I plant autumn\/winter baskets?<\/p>\n

    You can also plant your autumn winter baskets<\/a> at this stage, and there are many exciting options to add in.<\/p>\n

    Martine explains: “For hanging baskets, autumn is a time to embrace structure, jewel-toned colour and interesting textures. I love combining violas and pansies, which are surprisingly resilient, with trailing ivy and helichrysum, as well as little pops of calocephalus for silver tone and shape.”<\/p>\n

    “Cyclamen are fantastic for a burst of rich colour \u2013 think ruby, plum, deep rose, and reds. They tuck in beautifully among trailing foliage. For an extra layer of charm, use small ornamental cabbages and heathers; both of which bring in texture and that earthy, autumnal mood we all crave. Don\u2019t forget to deadhead regularly, water when needed and tuck in a little slow-release feed to keep everything going strong through the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Adding edimentals to your autumn and winter beds<\/p>\n

    If you want to get creative, then why not add some edimentals to your garden beds for autumn and winter? These edible plants<\/a> will help cultivate a sustainable and thriving space.<\/p>\n

    Garden expert Mike Carthew<\/a> explains: “Weave in some edimentals, these are plants that are both ornamental and edible. Rainbow chard, with its neon stems, makes as much of an impact as any bedding plant while providing harvests right through winter. Calendula will keep flowering into autumn and its bright petals are edible as well as useful for home remedies.”<\/p>\n

    Mike adds: “For something more unusual, try cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana). The papery lanterns look beautiful among other bedding \u2013 and in a sheltered spot, you\u2019ll be rewarded with sweet, golden fruits. Even strawberries can be tucked into pots or borders as ground-cover, giving a handful of late fruits now and a head start for next year. The new variety ‘Just Add Cream’ is pink-flowered and has that elusive alpine strawberry flavour that has never been matched by supermarket varieties.”<\/p>\n
