The Dublin man passed away in the Mater Hospital yesterday evening.<\/p>\n

He suffered the fatal injuries after hitting his head on the street following the interaction with the on-duty garda on O\u2019Connell Street in the early hours of Friday morning.<\/p>\n

The case is the subject of a major investigation by Fiosru, the Police Ombudsman, who have appealed for information in the case.<\/p>\n

The early morning incident which happened near the Holiday Inn on O\u2019Connell Street at 4.15am on Friday was captured on good quality CCTV.<\/p>\n

The 51-year-old Dublin man was rushed to hospital in a \u201cgravely ill\u201d condition.<\/p>\n

Sources have described what has happened as a \u201cdevastating tragedy for all involved\u201d.<\/p>\n

It is understood the garda who is based at a north inner city station has not yet faced disciplinary sanctions in relation to the incident which followed an interaction between garda\u00ed and the 51-year-old man.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Fiosr\u00fa, said the man suffered “serious harm\u201d, prompting a referral under new policing legislation.<\/p>\n

Fiosr\u00fa is now appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time. In particular, investigators are keen to hear from anyone close to the hotel at around 4.15am, or from drivers \u2014 including taxis \u2014 who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone with information which may be of assistance to this independent investigation is asked to contact Fiosr\u00fa at 0818 600 800 or info@fiosru.ie,\u201d the Ombudsman\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

One of Fiosr\u00fa\u2019s on-call investigators attended the scene on Friday and the office confirmed it is continuing to engage with the man\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

The referral to Fiosr\u00fa was made under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, which requires the Garda Commissioner to pass on any matter indicating that the act or omission of a garda member may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.<\/p>\n

Section 203(1) of the Act provides for such referrals, while Section 208(1)(b) prevents the Ombudsman\u2019s office from making further public comment while an investigation is underway.<\/p>\n

Fiosr\u00fa said the investigation is ongoing and that no additional details could be provided at this stage.<\/p>\n
