A plume of debris and water blasted skyward before falling back down, triggering a monster tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>These are the findings of a new study, in which researchers attempt to settle a decades-long dispute over the origins of the Silverpit Crater, now buried 700 meters beneath the seabed about 130 kilometers off the southeastern coast of Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-just-debunked-earths-oldest-impact-crater\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Just Debunked &#8216;Earth&#8217;s Oldest Impact Crater&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our evidence shows that a 160-meter-wide  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/asteroid\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73095\" data-postid=\"175399\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">asteroid<\/a> hit the seabed at a low angle from the west,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> first author Uisdean Nicholson, a geoscientist at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Within minutes, it created a 1.5-kilometer-high curtain of rock and water that then collapsed into the sea, creating a tsunami over 100 meters high,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Discovered in 2002 using 3D seismic data, the crater is at the center of a long-running scientific debate about its formation. Scientists originally described it as a &#8220;hypervelocity impact structure,&#8221; citing its orientation within the circular fault zone as well as its own circular shape and central peak, all features consistent with high-speed impacts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/north_sea_impact_crater_642.jpg\" alt=\"color map of crater\" width=\"642\" height=\"400\" class=\"wp-image-175741 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A false-color image of the Silverpit Crater. (<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Silverpit_northwest_perspective.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Allen\/Production Geoscience Ltd; Simon Stewart\/BP<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Yet it&#8217;s rare to find impact craters like this, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicholson acknowledges<\/a>, and some researchers prefer other explanations. According to competing theories, the crater may have been formed from below, either due to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1144\/1354-079309-843\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">subsurface salt movements<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nature02476\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">volcanic activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When the issue came to a vote at a 2009 geology debate, those present voted overwhelmingly in favor of the non-celestial origin, leading many to consider the issue settled.<\/p>\n<p>Yet using multiple lines of evidence, including novel imaging capabilities, the new study makes a compelling case otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1759193889_582_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New seismic imaging has given us an unprecedented look at the crater,&#8221; Nicholson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>. &#8220;Samples from an oil well in the area also revealed rare &#8216;shocked&#8217; quartz and feldspar crystals at the same depth as the crater floor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Finding these shocked crystals was key to solving the case, he explains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were exceptionally lucky to find these \u2013 a real &#8216;needle-in-a-haystack&#8217; effort,&#8221; Nicholson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>. &#8220;These prove the impact crater hypothesis beyond doubt, because they have a fabric that can only be created by extreme shock pressures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The findings seem to vindicate co-author Gareth Collins, a professor of planetary science at Imperial College London who was at the 2009 debate and has long supported the impact scenario.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I always thought that the impact hypothesis was the simplest explanation and most consistent with the observations,&#8221; Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is very rewarding to have finally found the silver bullet,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adds<\/a>. &#8220;We can now get on with the exciting job of using the amazing new data to learn more about how impacts shape planets below the surface, which is really hard to do on other planets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only about 200 terrestrial impact craters have been confirmed on our planet, and it&#8217;s even rarer to verify one at sea, where just 30 or so are agreed upon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Silverpit is a rare and exceptionally preserved hypervelocity impact crater,&#8221; Nicholson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/scientists-find-proof-that-an-asteroid-hit-the-north-sea-over-43-million-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>. &#8220;These are rare because the Earth is such a dynamic planet \u2013 plate tectonics and erosion destroy almost all traces of most of these events.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By shedding new light on this ancient calamity, the researchers hope to both understand Earth&#8217;s history and help prepare humanity for the next big one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can use these findings to understand how asteroid impacts shaped our planet throughout history,&#8221;
