A few days on from the climax of the 2025 Ryder Cup, you get the sense that this year’s edition of the event will be largely remembered for the incidents involving Rory McIlroy at Bethpage.<\/p>\n

The Holywood native was always going to be a big story at the Ryder Cup as the talisman on the European team. However, the headlines would be dominated by the treatment he received at the hands of American fans at the New York venue.<\/p>\n

McIlroy was subjected to some horrendous abuse, with his family also being targeted. His wife even had a beer thrown at her at one point.<\/p>\n

The golfer was understandably affected by the abuse, having a number of confrontations with fans on the course. He also shouted a number of obscenities towards the galleries after some key putts over the weekend.<\/p>\n

While such a response was more than understandable, not everyone was as understanding of Rory McIlroy’s behaviour at the Ryder Cup<\/p>\n

USA Ryder Cup Legend Bizarrely Calls Out Rory McIlroy For Behaviour<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paul Azinger knows a thing or two about Ryder Cup confrontations, having famously clashed<\/a> with European legend Seve Ballesteros at the 1991 edition of the event.<\/p>\n

Despite being familiar with the emotions the event can stoke up, he was not impressed with Rory McIlroy’s behaviour on this occasion.<\/p>\n

Speaking on SubPar, he accused the 36-year old of being hypocritical with his comments in the aftermath of Sunday’s final round at Bethpage.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday in the press conference he said \u2018I think golf should be held to a higher standard of decorum. But in the meantime he says \u2018f-you, f-you, f-you\u2019 in full voice for the world to see. <\/p>\n

Now I want to take a shot at Rory, who I love. Rory\u00a0 probably turned down $500million not to go to LIV. He’s a European and we see how much he wants to beat our tour.<\/p>\n

But he stayed here and he fought for us, fought for the PGA Tour. I love him for that.<\/p>\n

But today after the press conference, he’s saying ‘I think golf should be held to a higher standard of decorum’.<\/p>\n

But in the meantime he says ‘f you, f you, f you’ in full voice for the world to see. He turns around and says to the guy ‘shut the f up’.<\/p>\n

The guy in the media today says ‘how did that feel Rory, to tell the guy to shut the f up and then hit it two feet’. He said ‘it felt pretty f-ing good’.<\/p>\n

Which is it Rory? Is it that golf is held to a higher standard, or are you going to ‘f you’ the fans and act like that’s ok?<\/p>\n

I love Rory, but you can’t say that. You can’t say that the fans need to behave better and in the meantime lay them to waste.<\/p>\n

You can’t do both, you’ve got to be one or the other.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

These comments certainly seem to entirely miss the context of Rory McIlroy’s comments, with his response on the golf course having come after a barrage of abuse from the galleries.<\/p>\n

The treatment of him and other players certainly was not a good look for the Ryder Cup. That is something that the Americans will need to rectify during future editions of the event in the country.<\/p>\n
