Credit: Masato Hattori<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Mongolia\u2019s Gobi Desert, researchers uncovered a remarkably complete fossil of a dome-headed dinosaur that lived 108 million years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nicknamed the \u201cprecious one,\u201d this teenage pachycephalosaur is the oldest of its kind ever found, pushing the group\u2019s fossil record back by 15 million years.<\/p>\n<p>Discovery of a Teen Dinosaur in the Gobi Desert<\/p>\n<p>A fossilized \u201cteenager\u201d of a dome-headed dinosaur has been unearthed in Mongolia\u2019s Gobi Desert, and scientists say it could help resolve long-standing mysteries about this unusual group. Reported in Nature, the discovery reveals a brand-new species of pachycephalosaur and stands out as both the oldest and most complete skeleton of its kind ever recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPachycephalosaurs are iconic dinosaurs, but they\u2019re also rare and mysterious,\u201d says Lindsay Zanno, associate research professor at North Carolina State University, head of paleontology at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and corresponding author of the work.<\/p>\n<p>The fossil was uncovered in the Khuren Dukh site of the Eastern Gobi Basin by Tsogtbaatar Chinzorig of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Chinzorig, who is the paper\u2019s lead author, is currently a research assistant at NC State.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Zava-Skull.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-495913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Zava-Skull-777x413.jpg\" alt=\"Zava Skull\" width=\"777\" height=\"413\"  \/><\/a>Z. rinpoche skull. Credit: Tsogtbaatar Chinzorig<br \/>\nNaming Zavacephale rinpoche \u2013 The \u201cPrecious One\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The species has been formally named Zavacephale rinpoche. The first part, zava, means \u201croot\u201d or \u201corigin\u201d in Tibetan, while cephal comes from the Latin for \u201chead.\u201d The second name, rinpoche, translates to \u201cprecious one\u201d in Tibetan and highlights the jewel-like appearance of the domed skull, which was found protruding from a cliff.<\/p>\n<p>This dinosaur lived approximately 108 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous in what is now Mongolia\u2019s Gobi Desert. At that time, the landscape was a valley dotted with lakes and edged by cliffs and escarpments. Pachycephalosaurs were herbivores, with adults reaching about 14 feet (4.3 meters) in length, 7 feet (2.1 meters) in height, and weighing between 800 and 900 pounds (363 \u2013 410 kilograms).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZ. rinpoche predates all known pachycephalosaur fossils to date by about 15 million years,\u201d Chinzorig says. \u201cIt was a small animal \u2013 about three feet or less than one meter long \u2013 and the most skeletally complete specimen yet found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Lindsay-Zanno-Holds-Zava-Skull.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-496579\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Lindsay-Zanno-Holds-Zava-Skull-777x1020.jpg\" alt=\"Lindsay Zanno Holds Zava Skull\" width=\"777\" height=\"1020\"  \/><\/a>Paleontologist Lindsay Zanno holds the skull of Zavacephale rinpoche. Credit: Alfio Alessandro Chiarenza<br \/>\nUnlocking the Mystery of Dome Development<\/p>\n<p>The Z. rinpoche specimen the team discovered was not fully grown when it died. However, it already sported a fully formed dome, though without much of the additional ornamentation found on other pachycephalosaur fossils.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZ. rinpoche is an important specimen for understanding the cranial dome development of pachycephalosaurs, which has been debated for a long time due to the absence of early diverging or pre-Late Cretaceous species and the fragmentary nature of nearly all pachycephalosaurian fossils,\u201d Chinzorig says.<\/p>\n<p>How to tell whether two skulls that look different belong to two distinct species or just different growth stages of the same species is a long-standing debate for paleontologists who study this group, and that\u2019s where Z. rinpoche comes in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPachycephalosaurs are all about the bling, but we can\u2019t use flashy signaling structures alone to figure out what species they belong to or what growth stage they\u2019re in because some cranial ornamentation changes as animals mature,\u201d Zanno says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Zava-Hand-Bones-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-496578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Zava-Hand-Bones-777x583.jpg\" alt=\"Zava Hand Bones\" width=\"777\" height=\"583\"  \/><\/a>Z. rinpoche hand bones. Credit: Alfio Alessandro Chiarenza<br \/>\nA Juvenile with a Fully Formed Dome<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe age dinosaurs by looking at growth rings in bones, but most pachycephalosaur skeletons are just isolated, fragmentary skulls,\u201d Zanno adds. \u201cZ. rinpoche is a spectacular find because it has limbs and a complete skull, allowing us to couple growth stage and dome development for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By examining a thin slice of the specimen\u2019s lower leg bone, the researchers determined that, despite sporting a fully formed dome, this Z. rinpoche was still a juvenile when it died.<\/p>\n<p>Headbutting and Dinosaur Social Life<\/p>\n<p>Pachycephalosaurs are famous for their large domed skulls and are often depicted using those domes to duel in epic headbutting contests. \u201cThe consensus is that these dinosaurs used the dome for socio-sexual behaviors,\u201d Zanno says. \u201cThe domes wouldn\u2019t have helped against predators or for temperature regulation, so they were most likely for showing off and competing for mates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you need to headbutt yourself into a relationship, it\u2019s a good idea to start rehearsing early,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/images\/Zava-Discovery-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-496577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Zava-Discovery-777x519.jpg\" alt=\"Zava Discovery\" width=\"777\" height=\"519\"  \/><\/a>Z. rinpoche at time of discovery. Credit: Tsogtbaatar Chinzorig<br \/>\nA Once-in-a-Lifetime Fossil Discovery<\/p>\n<p>Z. rinpoche fills in huge gaps in the pachycephalosaur timeline \u2013 both in terms of when they lived and how they grew, the researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis specimen is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery. It is remarkable for being the oldest definitive pachycephalosaur, pushing back the fossil record of this group by at least 15 million years, but also because of how complete and well-preserved it is,\u201d Zanno says. \u201cZ. rinpoche gives us an unprecedented glimpse into the anatomy and biology of pachycephalosaurs, including what their hands looked like and that they used stomach stones to grind food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hands, Stomach Stones, and Tail Secrets<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe newly recovered materials of Z. rinpoche, such as the hand elements, the stomach stones (gastroliths), and an articulated tail with covered tendons, reshape our understanding of the paleobiology, locomotion, and body plan of these \u2018mysterious\u2019 dinosaurs,\u201d Chinzorig says.<\/p>\n<p>Reference: \u201cA domed pachycephalosaur from the early Cretaceous of Mongolia\u201d by Tsogtbaatar Chinzorig, Ryuji Takasaki, Junki Yoshida, Ryan T.
