{"id":9875,"date":"2025-08-19T18:03:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T18:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/9875\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T18:03:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T18:03:08","slug":"lgbtq-literary-prize-paused-as-nominees-pull-out-over-inclusion-of-irish-author-john-boyne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/9875\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ+ literary prize \u2018paused\u2019 as nominees pull out over inclusion of Irish author John Boyne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Organisers of the Polari Prize said the awards have been put on \u201cpause\u201d but have \u201calready secured strong representation for next year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">A campaign calling for a boycott of the Polari Prize, which included a statement signed by more than 800 writers and workers in the publishing industry, stemmed from Boyne\u2019s views on transgender issues and support for British author JK Rowling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Writing in the Sunday Independent last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/entertainment\/books-arts\/book-news\/john-boyne-on-jk-rowling-as-a-writer-im-in-awe-of-her-achievements-as-a-reader-i-love-her-work-and-as-a-fellow-terf-i-stand-four-square-behind-her\/a857888465.html?bcrFallback=bcrFallback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boyne expressed support for JK Rowling and described himself as a \u201cfellow Terf\u201d,<\/a> an acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist, a term for those who describe themselves as feminists but deny that transgender women are women and oppose trans-inclusive legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cWe are profoundly disappointed by the Polari prize\u2019s decision to include John Boyne on the longlist for this year\u2019s Polari book prize,\u201d the statement from boycott organisers read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIn any year, the decision to include Mr Boyne on the longlist would be, in our view, inappropriate and hurtful to the wider community of LGBTQ+ readers and writers. That the decision has been made this year \u2013 in the context of rising anti-trans hatred and systematic exclusion of trans people from public life in the UK and across the world \u2013 is inexcusable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"John Boyne. Nicola Dinan, the author who won last year\u2019s Polari Prize, resigned from the jury for one of this year\u2019s awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Sacha Coward, one of the authors who opted to leave this year\u2019s prize, said his decision to leave was \u201cnot orchestrated\u201d and each writer made their decision \u201cbecause of their own sense of integrity as to what the Polari Prize claimed to stand for\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In a post on Bluesky, he said the purpose of the award was to include transgender, nonbinary and intersex authors and the issue was \u201cnot with Boyne as a person, but with his statements about transgender people and those who support them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">&#8220;Irrespective of how John feels, his words are simply not compatible with an inclusive prize that celebrates all LGBTQ+ people. Just like a racist statement would not be allowed in a prize for writers of colour, or a sexist statement tolerated for a prize for feminist writers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Jason Okundaye, another author who withdrew from the Polari Prize, wrote in The Guardian that Boyne\u2019s \u201cviewpoint is abhorrent\u201d and a previous statement issued by the organisers prompted him to \u201cimmediately\u201d withdraw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He wrote: \u201cThe prize claims that it does \u201cnot eliminate books based on the wider views of the writer\u201d. But a prize claiming to be a celebration of LGBTQ+ inclusion should know that the condition of trans people isn\u2019t reducible to a debate in which people are simply holding \u201cdifferent positions\u201d \u2013 they are a minority group facing unprecedented levels of harassment and political antagonism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Okundaye said the authors who withdrew from the prize have been referred to as the \u201cTrans Taliban\u201d and \u201cQueer Isis\u201d, and accusations have been made of freedom of speech and expression being compromised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">&#8220;But we have not called for his books to be pulped, and evidently he has, and continues to be, more than free to share whatever views he likes and write as many books as he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Organisers released a statement confirming the decision to pause this year\u2019s Polari Prize, committing to increase \u201crepresentation of trans and gender non-conforming judges on the panels for all the awards and undertake a governance and management review to include our aims and values and work to better support everyone within our LGBTQ+ Polari community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Co Dublin native Boyne, best known for his historical novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, was named on the longlist for the 2024 novella Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The decision to pause this year\u2019s Polari Prize marked a change of heart for the organisers, who previously said they were \u201ccommitted to going forward\u201d despite the controversy over Boyne\u2019s inclusion, saying he had been longlisted on merit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">A statement released on August 7 said it was \u201cinevitable\u201d that even within the LGBTQ+ community, \u201cwe can at times hold radically different positions on substantive issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Writing in The Telegraph following the cancellation of this year\u2019s Polari Prize, Boyne said the statement released by Polari\u2019s organisers \u201cworries\u201d him and it seemed \u201cabsurd and wrong\u201d for debut writers who withdrew from the prize to lose out on an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In a statement posted on X last week, Boyne said he had been a victim of \u201cbullying\u201d and been subject to \u201cendless harassment at the hands of both strangers and fellow writers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He asked that Earth not be considered for
