{"id":98863,"date":"2025-10-02T10:37:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:37:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/98863\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T10:37:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T10:37:06","slug":"connolly-faces-questions-over-attempts-to-hire-person-with-firearms-conviction-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/98863\/","title":{"rendered":"Connolly faces questions over attempts to hire person with firearms conviction \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Presidential candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> is facing questions this morning about her attempts to employ a woman in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oireachtas\/\">Oireachtas<\/a> with a conviction for firearms offences in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/special-criminal-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/special-criminal-court\">Special Criminal Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Journal published a detailed story last night about the woman\u2019s background and the firearms offences, and said Connolly tried to hire her in 2018 but the move was blocked by counter-terrorism garda\u00ed over security concerns. The woman was on early release at the time after serving four years of a six-year sentence imposed after a 2014 trial. The offences were linked to dissident republican activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Connolly\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">campaign<\/a> has declined to reply to repeated questions, though it has published a number of statements on other issues since the story was published last night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said the matter is \u201cvery serious\u201d and Ms Connolly needs to clarify the circumstances around her attempts to employ the woman. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The details reported in the media would \u201cindicate a very serious lack of judgement\u201d on the part of the left-wing candidate, the Fianna F\u00e1il leader said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think Catherine Connolly needs to clarify that in its entirety and be fully transparent in respect of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This morning, Sinn F\u00e9in\u2019s Pearse Doherty said the worker was \u201chighly qualified and came through the process\u201d. He added that he expected Ms Connolly would answer questions on the issue this morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last night, the Social Democrats said: \u201cIt is appropriate that there are rigorous vetting procedures for Oireachtas staff and it\u2019s not surprising this application was turned down at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The party added that the woman concerned had \u201cturned her life around and recently appeared as an expert before an Oireachtas committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">People Before Profit declined to comment, but it is understood the party does not see the story as being a major issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Labour did not respond to questions though some party sources are understood to be alarmed by the reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fianna F\u00e1il junior minister Thomas Byrne said Ms Connolly must provide an \u201cimmediate and comprehensive explanation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt appears that Deputy Connolly repeatedly tried to gain security clearance to Leinster House for a person who was a member of a fringe anti-peace process group, who was convicted of serious arms offences, including being caught with arms and ammunition in a stolen van while wearing a disguise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/30\/presidential-debate-the-language-of-division-and-saying-the-country-is-full-is-abhorrent\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Presidential debate: What Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin said in first TV debateOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis person was only denied access to our national Parliament through the direct intervention of counter-terrorism officers and in the face of Catherine Connolly\u2019s repeated efforts to have them overruled,\u201d Mr Byrne said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cGiven the concerns of antiterrorism officers and the fact that she was fully informed about the crimes and connections of the person, it is shocking that Catherine Connolly kept demanding access to our Parliament for someone who was connected to a group which sought to destroy the Northern peace process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThis is not some small matter. The President and their staff are trusted with a wide range of highly confidential documents, including government memos, and they receive regular security briefings.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">But Fianna F\u00e1il TD Se\u00e1n \u00d3 Feargha\u00edl, who was ceann comhairle at the time, told The Irish Times last night it was normal practice to scrutinise the employment record and standing of anybody coming to work in Leinster House. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe became aware that somebody was there who would not have gone through the normal vetting process. We asked them to undertake that vetting process. They left before that process began,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI would expect that if the person in question had dealings with highly reputable members of the Oireachtas, such as Catherine Connolly, [she] would not have sought to bring somebody, in my opinion, into the House who would be in any way a threat to the security or the efficient operation of the House.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Former Fianna F\u00e1il TD \u00c9amon \u00d3 Cu\u00edv, who visited the woman when she was serving her sentence in Limerick Prison, said he met her in Leinster House during that time, when she was working for Ms Connolly.
