{"id":98966,"date":"2025-10-02T11:47:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T11:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/98966\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T11:47:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T11:47:09","slug":"larry-goodman-continues-to-eye-developing-irish-oil-field-after-licence-expiry-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/98966\/","title":{"rendered":"Larry Goodman continues to eye developing Irish oil field after licence expiry \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/larry-goodman\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/larry-goodman\">Larry Goodman\u2019s<\/a> family continues to harbour an ambition for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barryroe\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barryroe\">Barryroe <\/a>oil and gas prospect off the coast of Co Cork to be developed, two years after rescuing the company that held the licence before it was allowed to lapse by the previous government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Goodman family companies acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barryroe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barryroe\/\">Barryroe Offshore Energy <\/a>(BOE) from examinership in late 2023, after agreeing to inject as much as \u20ac6.35 million into the company, which ran into financial trouble after then minister for the environment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2023\/08\/18\/ryan-playing-for-high-stakes-in-barryroe-licence-move\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2023\/08\/18\/ryan-playing-for-high-stakes-in-barryroe-licence-move\/\">Eamon Ryan <\/a>refused to grant a permit for its key Barryroe oil project. This resulted in its exploration licence, initially granted in 2011, lapsing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While a rescue bid by the now 88-year-old beef tycoon centred on the possibility that the explorer could move its focus to green energy projects, Barryroe\u2019s annual financial statement for 2024 shows that he still has an ambition to develop the field. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn the period [since Barryroe exited examinership], the principle focus continued to be on the Barryroe oil and gasfield,\u201d said the company, which was recently renamed as Barryroe Transition Energy. \u201cThe company has sought to promote the case for the granting of a consent to carry out further exploration works at the field, as the company believes that there is a strong and compelling case to do so.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company traces its roots back to 1981, when businessman Anthony O\u2019Reilly and a group of investors set up Atlantic Resources to pursue opportunities at a time of heightened speculation about oil and gas resources off Irish shores.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Should we put more money into Irish soccer? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Barryroe \u2013 which was also known as Providence Resources for years \u2013 burned through more than \u20ac270 million of cash raised from share placings in the 12 years before it ended up in examinership. The Barryroe field was the last remaining exploration hope. The prospect, 50km off the Cork coast, was found in 2012 to have more than 300 million barrels of oil as well as gas resources.
