{"id":99019,"date":"2025-10-02T12:24:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T12:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/99019\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T12:24:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T12:24:08","slug":"two-dead-after-attack-on-manchester-synagogue-police-say-with-suspect-shot-by-officers-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/99019\/","title":{"rendered":"Two dead after attack on Manchester synagogue, police say, with suspect shot by officers \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two people have died following an attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall and a suspect has been shot by officers, Greater Manchester Police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A statement said: \u201cWe can confirm two people have died following the major incident outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, Middleton Road, Crumpsall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA third person, a man believed to be the offender, was shot by GMP firearms officers and is also believed to be deceased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Four people have also been injured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\/\">Manchester<\/a> after a car was driven at members of the public and a man was stabbed outside a synagogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Greater Manchester Police said it was called to an incident in Middleton Road, Crumpsall, on Thursday where a man \u2013 who is believed to be the offender \u2013 was shot by firearms officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham told BBC Radio Manchester: \u201cIt is believed that the offender is deceased, although it\u2019s not confirmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sources say it is being treated as a potential terrorist incident. Counter-terrorism police and MI5, the security service covering the UK, have joined the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The incident has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Prime minister Keir Starmer will fly home early from a meeting of European leaders. Commenting on the attack, he said: I\u2019m appalled by the attack &#8230; the fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMy thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services and all the first responders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Starmer said police were being deployed to synagogues across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said: \u201cI think it is a vile and disgusting attack. I know that many Jewish people in our country feel that they\u2019re no longer safe and my heart goes out to the people who have been hurt by this, and everyone who\u2019s been affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier, in a statement, the police force said: \u201cPolice were called to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, at 9.31am by a member of the public, stating he had witnessed a car being driven towards members of the public and one man had been stabbed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The force said it declared a major incident at 9.37am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The statement continued: \u201cShots were fired by Greater Manchester Police firearms officers at 9.38am.
