At Bharatpur’s Kalsara Community Health Centre, the condition of a three-year-old child worsened soon after being given the syrup under the state’s free medicine scheme.

When the child’s health deteriorated further, the doctor, in a bid to prove the medicine was harmless, consumed the syrup himself and also gave it to hospital staff – only for all of them to fall ill.

On September 25, a three-year-old child was brought to the Kalsara Community Health Centre in Bayana block with complaints of cold and cough. The attending doctor, Tarachand Yogi, prescribed Dextromethorphan HBr Syrup IP 13.5 mg/5ml.

Immediately after consuming it, the child started losing consciousness. The family rushed him to another doctor, who recommended ventilator support, after which the child was referred to the Fortis Hospital in Jaipur.

Following the incident, the child’s family confronted Dr Yogi regarding the medicine’s safety. In response, the doctor consumed the syrup himself and administered it to two ambulance staff members to demonstrate its safety. All three individuals subsequently experienced adverse health effects, further intensifying concern about the medication’s safety in the health centre and the community.

After Dr Yogi left for home as he was feeling sick, he was found unconscious in his parked vehicle, with the engine running. Emergency responders rushed him in a serious condition to Jaipur’s Fortis Hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged two days later.

Authorities were promptly informed about the sequence of events. In response, distribution of Dextromethorphan HBr Syrup IP 13.5 mg/5ml was immediately banned across all government hospitals in Rajasthan.

The situation escalated further when a fatality was reported in Sikar district, where a five-year-old child died after consuming the same type of syrup at a government hospital. This incident reinforced concerns about the medicine’s safety and prompted renewed scrutiny of quality control in the supply of medication under state health initiatives.

Though the syrup has been banned, and an investigation ordered, Bayana Block’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Jogendra Gurjar said that a specific batch of syrup containing Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide salt is suspected to be faulty. As a precaution, supply and distribution of the syrup from that batch has been stopped in all government hospitals across the district.

– Ends

Inputs from Suresh Foujdar

Published By:

Sayan Ganguly

Published On:

Oct 2, 2025

A doctor’s attempt in Rajasthan to prove that the cough syrup he had prescribed was safe went terribly…

[274
63147,63149,63146,63150,18,63151,63153,135,51555,19,17,462,63152,63148,63154
0":"post-99085","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-medication","8":"tag-bharatpur-health-centre","9":"tag-child-illness","10":"tag-dextromethorphan-syrup","11":"tag-doctor-hospitalised","12":"tag-eire","13":"tag-faulty-cough-syrup","14":"tag-government-hospitals","15":"tag-health","16":"tag-health-crisis","17":"tag-ie","18":"tag-ireland","19":"tag-medication","20":"tag-medicine-safety","21":"tag-rajasthan-medicine-ban","22":"tag-syrup-investigation
["GET
