Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump said the truce, which has already faced repeated tensions and alleged violations from both sides, is now in an extremely weak condition.

“The ceasefire is unbelievably weak,” Trump said, adding that he was dissatisfied with Iran’s latest communication. He also criticised Tehran’s response in sharp terms, saying he could not even finish reading it.

Using a dramatic comparison, Trump remarked that the agreement was on ‘massive life support,’ likening it to a patient with only a minimal chance of survival.

The ceasefire first came into effect on April 8 after weeks of escalating military tensions between Washington and Tehran. The truce followed Trump’s warning that Iran’s “whole civilization” could be destroyed if an agreement was not reached. Although the arrangement was initially meant to last two weeks, Trump later decided to extend it on April 21.

Since its implementation, the ceasefire has struggled to remain stable, with both countries accusing each other of violating agreed terms.

One of the major conditions attached to the truce was the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route that had seen major disruptions since the conflict began. Trump had earlier said that Iran was expected to immediately restore smooth movement through the strategic waterway as part of the understanding.

However, after shipping activity reportedly failed to return to normal levels, the US administration ordered a naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman to restrict vessels moving in and out of Iranian ports.

Despite the ceasefire, military tensions in the region have continued. Last week, Iran reportedly launched attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates, while the US and Iran exchanged fire in the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon also confirmed strikes on two Iran-flagged oil tankers.

Even amid these developments, Trump administration officials had maintained that the ceasefire was technically still in place while waiting for Tehran’s response to Washington’s proposal concerning both the conflict and Iran’s nuclear programme.

On Sunday, Trump revealed on Truth Social that he had finally received Iran’s reply. Reacting strongly, he wrote, “I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!”
