Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has pledged his support to Lebanon in disarming the pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

He made the statement during a video conference with EU representatives and other leaders in the region, the state news agency SANA reported on Monday.

According to the report, al-Sharaa expressed his full support for “the serious and decisive steps taken by the governments of Iraq and Lebanon to protect their nations from the ongoing violence.”

The current escalation poses an existential threat to the entire region, he added.

The president said Syria has coordinated with regional partners and strengthened its border security to prevent the conflict from spilling over into Syrian territory.

The Syrian military has reinforced its presence along the Lebanese and Iraqi borders, he added.

The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia was a key ally of long-time Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad before his downfall in late 2024.

Since coming to power, the new Syrian government has been trying to curb the influence of Iran, another important former ally of Assad.

The Lebanese government is under pressure to disarm Hezbollah, which is engaged in a renewed conflict with Israel.

The Israeli military is once again launching massive attacks in southern Lebanon and Beirut, as the situation in the Middle East spirals since the US-Israeli attack on Iran 10 days ago.
