Russia’s Oil Revenue Boost Amid Iran Conflict and Urals Price Surge - News and Statistics

Russia has unexpectedly become a beneficiary of the current oil market upheaval. The ongoing conflict with Iran continues to disrupt shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, causing turmoil in global crude markets and making Moscow’s primary Urals crude grade exceptionally lucrative.

For fiscal purposes, Russia will determine its May oil earnings using an average Urals price of $94.87 per barrel. According to Bloomberg’s analysis of official figures, this marks the highest point since October 2023. This equates to approximately 7,300 rubles per barrel, representing a rise of 18% compared to April.

Yet, only a short time ago, Moscow lowered its 2026 economic expansion projection to 0.4% from 1.3%, conceding that the wartime growth mechanism is depleting its readily available momentum. Russia’s economy shrank by 0.3% in the first quarter, its first quarterly reduction since early 2023, as elevated interest rates, sanctions, and weakening internal activity began to accumulate.

Disruptions in Persian Gulf supply have driven purchasers back toward crude they previously shunned or accepted only at steep markdowns, such as Russian oil. India has reemerged as a significant customer, and Moscow is once again awash in petrodollars.

The additional funds have already provided the Kremlin with some flexibility. Bloomberg has previously noted that increased oil income enabled Russia to restart filling its sovereign wealth fund and delay certain politically sensitive budget reductions.

Russia’s currency has appreciated to its strongest point versus the dollar since early 2023. While this appears favorable initially, crude is traded in dollars while taxes are levied in rubles. A firmer currency diminishes the ruble-denominated value of each barrel exported.

Furthermore, Russia disbursed 359 billion rubles, or about $4.8 billion, in April alone to assist refiners and protect domestic fuel markets from international price surges.

Nevertheless, crude at roughly $95 is achieving what sanctions and monetary policy could not: temporarily making Russia’s fiscal difficulties seem less severe. The Kremlin has dedicated years to constructing a wartime economy, and for now, oil is helping sustain that apparatus.
