A tense confrontation unfolded in the US House of Representatives after Centcom Commander Admiral Brad Cooper sharply rebuked a Democratic lawmaker questioning Washington’s handling of the war on Iran.
During the hearing, Congressman Seth Moulton pressed Cooper on the administration’s strategy to “actually win this war”, arguing that the conflict appeared to be moving in the wrong direction.
Moulton, a former US Marine Corps officer who served during the Iraq war, said: “We don’t have a nuclear deal. We don’t have the [Strait of Hormuz] open.”
He added that the war “doesn’t seem to be going well” and questioned “how many more Americans we have to ask to die for this mistake?”
Cooper, who oversees US military operations linked to the conflict with Iran and is widely regarded for his composed public demeanour, reacted strongly to the remarks.
“I think that is an entirely inappropriate statement from you,” the admiral responded during the heated exchange.
Earlier in the hearing, Cooper had maintained that the United States had met all of its military objectives in the war on Iran. He also said that although a ceasefire remained in place, “we are prepared for a broad range of contingencies”.
The Centcom chief also declined to accept responsibility for the US strike on a school on February 28 that killed about 170 Iranians, most of them schoolchildren.
