Oil prices rose during early Asian trading on Friday as doubts intensified over the likelihood of a breakthrough in U.S.-Iran negotiations, with major unresolved issues persisting despite assertions of advancement. Brent crude futures stood at $104.80, up 2.13% for the session, while WTI futures reached $97.99, a 1.70% gain. This uptick follows a roughly 2% drop for both benchmarks on Thursday, when they touched their lowest levels in nearly two weeks, as traders briefly factored in the chance of diplomatic progress. Sentiment appears to have reversed overnight after contradictory signals emerged from negotiators.

A senior Iranian source informed Reuters that no deal had been finalized, though some differences had been reduced. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated there had been some encouraging signs in the discussions, but cautioned that any Iranian effort to restrict passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be unacceptable.

Six weeks into the ceasefire, attempts to finalize a durable agreement have yielded little substantial progress, with oil markets frequently reacting to statements from both sides before reversing when no concrete results emerge.

At the same time, the increasingly tight physical market conditions have triggered widespread inflation concerns globally, particularly as higher fuel costs impact transportation and manufacturing sectors. Global oil inventories are declining at an unprecedented rate, and numerous nations are adopting emergency measures to combat rising prices.

Highlighting market unease, ADNOC‘s chief executive cautioned yesterday that full oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz might not restart until at least the first or second quarter of 2027, even if hostilities ceased immediately. The UAE, having exited OPEC, is now intensifying efforts to boost its export capacity beyond Hormuz via a new pipeline.

In the near term, the sole viable solution for oil markets remains the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and markets will anxiously await either a diplomatic resolution or a significant military confrontation.
