Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday received a phone call from Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Majid Takht Ravanchi, during which both sides discussed recent developments in West Asia and reviewed bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X that the conversation focused on the evolving regional situation as well as ongoing India-Iran engagement across various areas of cooperation.

“Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri received a call from the Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs of Iran, Majid Takht Ravanchi. Discussions focused on recent developments in the region and a review of bilateral cooperation,” Jaiswal wrote.

Chabahar Port remains key focus of India-Iran ties

Earlier this month, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi reiterated that the Chabahar Port continues to be a major symbol of cooperation between India and Iran.

Speaking after the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 15, Araghchi acknowledged that US sanctions had slowed the port’s development, but expressed confidence that India would continue its involvement in the strategic project.

“Chabahar Port is one of the symbols of cooperation between Iran and India… It is now somehow slowed down because of the US sanctions. But I am confident this port would be like a golden gate for India to access Central Asia, the Caucasus and then Europe,” he said.

High-level engagements during India visit

During his visit to India, Araghchi also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The discussions covered a range of issues, including the situation in West Asia and the strategic importance of maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
