Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that a new series of explosions struck western Tehran on Monday as air defense systems activated across the capital and the western city of Kermanshah, with the exchanges marking the latest tit-for-tat strikes between Tehran and Israel.
The blasts were heard in western districts of the capital, according to IRIB. Air defenses were also triggered in Kermanshah, the local news outlet Khabar Fouri said on Telegram, as the region braced for further escalation following Sunday’s Israeli bombing of Beirut.
Ceasefire under strain
Israel struck the Lebanese capital despite an ongoing ceasefire on Sunday, prompting Iran to launch missiles at northern Israel. Israeli forces responded with waves of retaliatory airstrikes against Iranian targets that continued into Monday.
The region has been engulfed in hostilities since the United States and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran in late February, triggering Iranian retaliation against Israel and other regional countries hosting American military assets. A temporary ceasefire was brokered on April 8, though negotiations later stalled over disputes regarding implementation and subsequent regional developments.
