US President Donald Trump said Washington would achieve “total victory” over Iran within two weeks after Israel and Iran halted recent hostilities. Trump said US intervention helped preserve talks with Tehran, while Netanyahu warned Israel would respond forcefully if future attacks occur.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington would declare “total victory” over Iran within two weeks, hours after Israel and Iran agreed to halt a sharp escalation that threatened to reignite the West Asia conflict.

Iran, Israel say hostilities on hold

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the “fire on that front is contained” hours after Tehran said it had stopped its military action.

Iran launched missiles at Israel on Sunday over Israel’s ongoing war against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel then retaliated, despite Trump’s efforts to dissuade Netanyahu.

Going to win in 2 weeks

Trump said he intervened to stop the fighting and protect ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran.

“We’ve been a very tough team, and I think we are winning that battle, but you’re really going to win it over the next two weeks when we declare total victory,” Trump said during a telerally for Sen. Lindsey Graham.

“It’ll be a total victory. It’ll happen very soon, and oil prices will come tumbling down,” he added.

By Monday evening Netanyahu said the fighting with Iran had stopped “for now,” while warning Israel would retaliate if attacked.

Earlier, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz insisted that the campaign in Lebanon would carry on regardless and said Israel would strike the Hezbollah-dominated southern suburbs of Beirut in retaliation for each attack on northern Israel by the militant group.

Trump asked Netanyahu to avoid escalation

Trump said in a phone call with BBC that he had
urged Netanyahu to avoid further escalation. “All I did is say we have to use sense. We’re very close to signing a very powerful deal, a very good deal,” Trump said.

“They had already gone,” he said, referring to the missiles.

No casualties reported

Iran fired nearly 30 missiles at Israel overnight, according to the Israeli military, and Israel targeted military sites in the Islamic republic.

No casualties have been reported in either Israel or Iran after the exchange of fire.

The Israeli military said it had identified projectiles launched towards its soldiers operating in southern Lebanon, some of which were intercepted while one landed near troops without causing casualties.
