CASS TWP. — Quandel Concrete and Boger Concrete, a Lebanon County company, recently merged to form BQ Concrete, the company announced.
BQ Concrete is part of the Byler Materials Group, a Lancaster County family of construction companies that does business in Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.
“After seven years in business together through our joint venture, we’ve made the decision that the two companies are stronger together,” Jonathan Byler, president, said in a news release.
Chris Rowlands, BQ Concrete operations manager in Cass Twp., said the merger became official on Feb. 1.
The merger roughly doubles the size of the Quandel Concrete fleet to around 60 ready-mix trucks, Rowlands said, enabling the new company to undertake larger construction projects.
Rowlands and his sister, Katie Carr, have managed Quandel Concrete since 2023, he said.
Ronald and Bonnie Rowlands, their parents, owned the business with the late James W. Quandel Jr., Bonnie’s brother.
Established in 1946, James W. Quandel & Sons manufactured ready-mix concrete, retaining wall blocks and concrete accessories.
Quandel and Boger had worked together on construction projects for about several years.
When a fire damaged Quandel’s Cass Twp. operation in January 2023, Boger stepped in to help by supplying ready-mix concrete.
The Cass Twp. plant is located at 9 Schaeffer Hill Road, just outside Minersville.
In addition to Cass Twp., BQ Concrete has plants in Annville Twp. in Lebanon County, South Middleton Twp. near Carlisle and Lower Swatara Twp. in Dauphin County.
Byler Materials Group purchased Boger Concrete in 2007. Its other companies include Merrick Sand & Gravel and Byler Trucking Services and Byler Quarries, a joint venture with Quandel Concrete in 2019.
