Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s interim president, has said that his country can play a constructive role in addressing Lebanon’s crisis by supporting the Lebanese government and facilitating dialogue among the country’s political groups, including Hezbollah.
The Syrian state news agency SANA reported on Sunday, June 21, that al-Sharaa made the remarks during an interview with Al-Mashhad television.
He said his previous comments regarding Syria’s potential role in Lebanon had been misunderstood, with some interpreting them as an indication of possible Syrian military intervention in Lebanese affairs.
Al-Sharaa stressed that Syria seeks to establish economic corridors with Lebanon rather than military routes.
He referred to the historical trade ties between Damascus and Beirut, as well as between Homs and Tripoli.
The interim president added that Damascus’ discussions with the United States have focused on ending conflicts and addressing their consequences for both Lebanon and Syria.
Lebanon has faced severe political, economic, and security crises in recent years. Efforts to reduce tensions and strengthen the country’s state institutions continue.
