Strait of Hormuz Traffic Reaches 78 Ships on June 24, Highest Since Late February Conflict - News and Statistics

On June 24, vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz climbed to 78 ships, marking the highest tally since the conflict erupted in late February, as reported by S&P Global Commodities at Sea in a June 25 analysis. Among these, 42 percent utilized a corridor managed jointly by Oman and the International Maritime Organization.

Thirty-three vessels navigated the safe passage near the Omani shoreline, though some continued to travel nearer to Iranian waters, according to the report. On February 28, the conflict’s first day, 92 ships were logged. Of the 33 employing the Omani route, 25 were departing the Persian Gulf.

The analysis noted that while the majority of outward-bound vessels had been confined within the Gulf since fighting began, a subset of these movements involved ships that had entered more recently and were now leaving, hinting at early normalization and a gradual restoration of free navigation patterns.

However, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy raised objections to the adoption of a new route for Strait of Hormuz transit, without identifying the specific route, per a June 25 statement on the army’s sepahnews.ir website. The statement declared that hours earlier, without notifying or coordinating with Iran, certain authorities had introduced a new transit route, deeming it unacceptable and highly dangerous. It asserted that only routes announced by Iran are permissible and that navigating outside those channels is very risky and forbidden.

The International Maritime Organization stated on June 23 that it had secured safety assurances from relevant parties to employ the Omani route and a second route managed by Iran for evacuating 11,000 seafarers stranded on vessels in the Persian Gulf after the war began.

Yet four tankers reversed course after attempting to exit the Strait near or within Omani waters, and a container ship was struck by a projectile on June 25. The IMO halted the evacuation program that same day, citing a need for greater clarity on security conditions.

The 78 ships on June 24 comprised 22 oil and chemical tankers, 12 product tankers, four LPG vessels, and two LNG carriers, per the data. Ten crude tankers transited, including five VLCCs and three Suezmax ships heading outbound, plus two VLCCs entering the Persian Gulf. Only one VLCC, the Amak, is tied to Iran and under U.S. sanctions.

The Very Large Gas Carrier Zakher entered the Persian Gulf on June 22 and departed on June 24 via the Omani route after loading LPG at Das Island, UAE, en route to Yantai, China. The VLGC Silvio successfully exited the Persian Gulf on June 24 after being stranded since loading LPG at Mesaieed, Qatar, on March 2, and was last observed off Fujairah. Only one non-Iran-laden VLGC remains in the Persian Gulf, the India-flagged BW Loyalty, which loaded at Ras Laffan, Qatar, on April 17.
