Strait of Hormuz Mine Threat Persists After US-Iran Peace Deal - News and Statistics

The United Nations International Maritime Organization reported on Friday that roughly 80 mines are still located in historic shipping lanes within the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the difficulty of resuming normal operations along the vital oil transit route.

The conflict with Iran created two alternative shipping channels through the strait. One route follows Oman‘s coast and is managed by the United States. A separate corridor controlled by Tehran runs closer to Iran. The central passage, referred to as the Traffic Separation Scheme, is thought to contain explosives.

The presence of these explosives has caused concern among shipowners and crews who handle the transport of Middle Eastern oil, gas, and other goods to global markets.

After an interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran last week, the shipping industry has urged authorities to restore the original channel. The process of clearing the mines is expected to require several weeks.

Under the terms of the peace deal, Iran is responsible for removing the mines. Tehran has alternated between stating that vessels can pass freely and requiring its authorization for transit.

One vessel was attacked on the Omani route on Thursday, causing other ships to turn back. This incident led the IMO to cancel plans to evacuate freighters that have been stranded inside the Persian Gulf for months.

The peace agreement has helped restore exports from the region to approximately 80% of pre-war levels in recent days. More tankers were observed carrying cargoes out of the Persian Gulf on Friday.

Last week, Pakistan, which coordinates navigational warnings in the area, reported detecting a mine near Oman. The United States Navy previously stated that the southern route is free of mines. Earlier in June, the United Kingdom and France developed plans to lead a multinational mine-clearing mission in the strait.
