The already fragile arrangement meant to keep peace around the Strait of Hormuz has essentially fallen apart, even if not officially declared dead. Over the weekend, American and Iranian forces traded new military blows, even as diplomats are set to gather in Doha on Tuesday hoping to rescue what remains of a ceasefire that neither party seems truly committed to upholding.

The latest escalation began with an Iranian drone hitting the Panama-flagged tanker Kiku on June 27 while it moved through the strait hauling two million barrels of crude from Qatar’s Al Shaheen Offshore Terminal toward Fujairah. The strike struck the ship’s bridge near 08:00 UTC, but everyone aboard was unharmed and no environmental harm was noted. This incident came just two days after a similar drone attack on the container vessel Ever Lovely on June 25, which occurred as it traveled through the strait’s southern shipping lane.

In response, US Central Command targeted Iranian military assets such as surveillance gear, communications equipment, air defense installations, drone depots, and mine-laying systems. The command stated that Iran had been offered an opportunity to respect the ceasefire but chose not to. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps answered with a combined missile and drone assault on eight American military locations in Kuwait and Bahrain. Both Gulf nations condemned these strikes. No major destruction or American casualties were recorded.

These confrontations laid bare the near-complete failure of the 14-point understanding brokered by Pakistan under two weeks earlier. That pact aimed to stop fighting between the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other, reopen the strait for commercial vessels, and launch 60 days of talks on broader matters like Iran’s nuclear activities. Washington then lifted sanctions on Tehran. Since that time, conditions have worsened dramatically.

On Saturday, President Trump posted on Truth Social that there might come a moment when the US can no longer remain restrained and would have to finish militarily what it had already begun very effectively, warning that Iran would cease to exist if that moment arrives.

Iran’s stance regarding the strait has become more rigid, raising serious long-term worries. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi cautioned that vessels trying to avoid Iran’s chosen transit route near its coastline would heighten frictions and postpone the waterway’s reopening. The Revolutionary Guards stated that ships ignoring their traffic management rules would face harsher treatment than before. Mohammad Mokhber, an advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, posted on X that as long as Iran controlled the strait, Washington’s regional ambitions for dominance would not succeed.

The disagreement over routing is turning into a persistent source of tension. Oman introduced a different transit path along its own coast, created with the International Maritime Organization, which angered Tehran. Separately, Oman has told European allies that shipping through the strait is unlikely to revert to how it was before the conflict, and that possible charges for navigation help and other maritime services are being explored. French President Emmanuel Macron is set to meet Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Paris, with security matters concerning the Strait of Hormuz expected to be a key topic.
