Extensive coordination efforts between Iraqi and Iranian authorities, including the Embassy of the Islamic Republic in Baghdad, get underway for funeral processions scheduled to be held on July 8, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
Sources close to the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad have stated that the late leader’s body will arrive in Iraq on July 8 via Najaf International Airport. A number of Iraqi officials, religious figures, and social and political leaders are expected to receive the body upon arrival, and an official reception ceremony will be held at the airport.
Following the reception, the body will be transferred to the Shrine of Imam Ali (AS), first Shia Imam, where visitation and farewell ceremonies will be held.
The funeral procession will then proceed to Karbala, where a public funeral ceremony attended by large crowds is expected to take place in the area between the two holy shrines (Bayn al-Haramayn).
The body will subsequently be returned to Najaf Airport and transported to the holy city of Mashhad for final farewell and burial at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS).
According to the report, the administrations of the Alawi, Husayni, and Abbasi holy shrines, the governorates of Najaf and Karbala, Iraq’s Ministries of Transport, Interior, and Foreign Affairs, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), and the Office of the Iraqi Prime Minister are among the institutions responsible for coordinating and organizing the ceremonies.
More than 1.7 million Iraqi citizens from across the country have already registered to attend the funeral procession. Prominent Iraqi religious, political, tribal, cultural, and academic figures are also expected to attend what is being described as a historic event.
In addition to the ceremonies in Najaf and Karbala, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi pilgrims are expected to travel to Iran to participate in funeral events scheduled to take place in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad from July 4 to July 9.
To facilitate the movement of pilgrims, the relevant authorities in both Iran and Iraq, including the administrations of the holy shrines of Imam Ali and Imam Hussein (AS), the governorates of Karbala and Najaf and also ministries and top officials have already begun coordinating arrangements at land border crossings and airports.
