A vessel navigating off Oman’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz ignited early Tuesday after being hit by a projectile, the British military confirmed. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported the strike occurred near Limah, Oman, within the strait. According to the UKMTO, the projectile struck the ship’s port side as it was heading southbound out of the strait toward the Gulf of Oman. The agency stated there was no environmental damage from the incident and that an inquiry is ongoing.

Iranian state television later claimed a liquefied natural gas tanker was targeted after disregarding warnings. The report, citing unnamed sources, suggested Tehran was responsible for the attack on a vessel it alleged was transporting Qatari natural gas. However, no official acknowledgment from Iran has been made regarding the assault.

Last Thursday, Iran’s joint military command issued a directive requiring all oil tankers transiting the strait to follow its designated routes. The statement warned that any non-compliance, route deviation, or violation of Iran’s navigation rules in the Strait of Hormuz would trigger an immediate and forceful military response, endangering the offending ships. It also cautioned that any US military interference in the strait would be met with a swift and decisive reaction.

Under an interim agreement, Iran and the United States had allowed vessels to pass without fees for 60 days. But Tehran later insisted on controlling ship routes and imposing passage charges, overturning longstanding practices in the waterway. The US and numerous Gulf Arab states have rejected Iran’s demand for tolls. A prior initiative by Oman and a United Nations agency to establish an alternative route near Oman’s coast sparked regional attacks, underscoring the ongoing tensions.
