The summer trip included a Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia, major display events in eight cities and more than 50 whistle stops across 10 states, including inaugural visits to Indiana, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania.About Big Boy No. 4014The Union Pacific Big Boys were among the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built. Designed in the 1940s, the 4-8-8-4 articulated engines were built to haul heavy freight through the steep grades between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. The locomotives measure 133 feet long and weigh about 1.2 million pounds. Their articulated design allowed them to navigate curves while pulling massive loads. Big Boy No. 4014 traveled more than 1 million miles before it was retired in 1961. Union Pacific reacquired the locomotive in 2013 and restored it to operating condition in 2019, where it now serves as a traveling symbol of American railroad history and engineering. Watch partyNeill Funeral Home and the Paxtang Fire Company in Dauphin County will host a watch party on Tuesday for Big Boy No. 4014 at the rear of 3501 Derry St. in Paxtang Borough.According to the fire company, the event begins at 2 p.m. and will provide a safe, close-up view of Norfolk Southern’s railroad tracks as the historic locomotive passes through. Big Boy No. 4014 is expected to reach Paxtang around 2:55 p.m., if it departs Lebanon County on schedule, and is expected to travel on the track closest to the parking lot. Free hot dogs, chips and drinks will also be available.
