Alabama Air Force major killed in refueling aircraft crash in Iraq

  • March 14, 2026

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A family mourns the loss of an Air Force crew member killed when a refueling aircraft crashed in Iraq.

Major John “Alex” Klinner was among six crew members who died in the crash. Klinner graduated from Auburn University with a degree in mechanical engineering.

After his death, the sister of John’s wife, Libby Klinner, created a GoFundMe page to support Libby and her three children.

Auburn University and Senator Tommy Tuberville posted on Facebook Saturday honoring Klinner.

On the GoFundMe page, the family said that any amount will make a difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing the page and keeping the family in your prayers is appreciated.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this post incorrectly said the crash happened in Iran. The crash happened in Iraq.
