Explosions were reported in several parts of Iran early on Tuesday after the US military launched a fresh wave of strikes on targets in the country.
Iranian news agency Tasnim reported explosions in Konarak, in the south-eastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan and in the port city of Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman.
Iranian state broadcaster Press TV also reported US strikes near the city of Shiraz in south-central Iran, while the Fars news agency said several explosions had been heard around Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and near the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
Earlier, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on social media platform X that the strikes began at 11:30 pm local time in Iran on Monday (2000 GMT), but did not disclose the specific targets.
“The strikes are designed to further degrade Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” CENTCOM said.
The strikes marked the 10th consecutive night of US attacks on targets in Iran after Tehran carried out retaliatory strikes against countries hosting US military bases in the region.
Tanker struck in Strait of Hormuz
Meanwhile, a tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said, a day after another vessel caught fire following an attack in the same area.
UKMTO said on X that the incident occurred about 8 nautical miles (15 kilometres) north-east of Limah, Oman.
Iran has demanded that ships use a route along its coastline through the Strait of Hormuz and has repeatedly said that only the route designated by Tehran is safe.
The dispute over navigation through the strategic waterway, a key transit route for global oil, gas and fertilizer shipments, has become a central flashpoint in the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran.
