Two buses collided in Syria on Saturday, leaving 35 people dead, a health official said.
Thirty others were injured in the accident that occurred on a road linking the capital Damascus and the province of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria, Dr Najib al-Naasan, the director of the Health Ministry’s ambulance and emergency department, added, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA.
The collision involved two buses: one carrying security personnel and the other civilians, the Syrian Interior Ministry said.
TV footage showed one bus in flames in the aftermath.
In response, military helicopters were dispatched to the site to help in medical evacuations of the victims, SANA said.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
The route where the crash happened is known as the “road of death” due to the almost daily accidents on it.
Syria has been roiled by more than a decade of civil war.
