The Tehran Prosecutor’s Office has warned that it will take legal action against individuals who publicly support what the authorities describe as “coup plotters” and “enemy agents”, following the implementation of prison sentences against a number of defendants.
In a statement carried by the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, the prosecutor’s office said it welcomed “scholarly criticism” of judicial procedures but would act “decisively and without leniency” against anyone who directly or indirectly supported those convicted or repeated the views of what it described as hostile groups and networks linked to foreign intelligence services.
The warning came after a number of public figures and other individuals voiced support for people convicted in connection with what the authorities refer to as the “Dey 1404 coup” — an alleged coup attempt and unrest in late December 2025 and January 2026 — and the “Ramadan War”, the official Iranian name for this year’s conflict with Israel and the United States.
The prosecutor’s office said it had opened criminal cases against several individuals after receiving reports from security and intelligence agencies and monitoring activity on social media. It said the cases had been referred to the competent judicial authorities.
According to the statement, published material will be reviewed carefully before legal action is taken.
The prosecutor’s office said that while it welcomed academic criticism of judicial proceedings, it would not tolerate support for those it described as coup plotters and enemy agents or the repetition of positions promoted by groups affiliated with foreign intelligence services in opposition to court rulings that had completed all stages of the judicial process.
