Authorities are looking into a “safety incident” that could have led to airborne disaster for US President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, US time, the Marine One helicopter carrying Donald Trump took off from the White House but passenger planes at one of Washington DC’s airports were not held to let the President pass.

The Federal Aviation Administration has insisted it was not a “dangerous close call” but one report said the President and a passenger jet were “converging“ on one another and did not have the adequate minimum space between them.

Elsewhere, the US is reportedly reassessing its plans to use nuclear weapons if there were to be a war with Russia or China.

The plan could see the US give the President options to use more tactical nuclear weapons in a “regional war” amid fears Moscow and Beijing could team up in unison to thwart the US.

And there are claims the US is “inching closer” to a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz – crucially without tolls being paid to Tehran. But the deal might only be temporary.

In domestic politics, a series of left populist candidates have won primaries for the Democratic Party.

American voters will go to the polls in November with the Democrats keen to win a majority in Congress as Donald Trump faces dire polling numbers.

But the Mr Trump has said the success of the Democratic Socialist candidates shows the party is now run by “communists”. The party denies this but it’s clear there is now a major split in the Democrats between centrists and socialists.
