Welcome to our live coverage of US politics and the war in Iran.

Iran’s parliament is reviewing a plan to ban US and Israeli ships, as well as vessels from other “hostile countries,” from transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The ban would go into effect until the Islamic Republic is compensated for war damage, according to Iranian state media.

Meanwhile, commercial ships allowed to pass through the strait would have to pay fees of up to 7 per cent of cargo value.

Iran would also have the ability to fine ships 20 per cent of cargo if they violated the terms of the draft plan.

The US appeared to quickly reject those terms, with a government official telling CNBC that “any temporary routes will be without any impediments – meaning no approvals or permissions and no tolls or charges”.

Those Republicans have now voted to hold Dr Fauci in contempt of congress for not answering their questions.

Mr Fauci’s lawyer said it was a “crude political stunt”.
