Israel’s Iron Beam laser defense system has yet to enter full operational use despite being delivered eight months ago, according to a senior Israeli defense official cited by Ynet.

Only one Iron Beam system has so far been handed over to the military, with the first unit delivered in December 2025. The remaining steps needed to make the system operational have not been completed, according to the report.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems developed Iron Beam as a high-power laser system designed to intercept rockets, mortars, drones, and other aerial threats. Israel has promoted the technology as a complement to its existing air defense systems.

Unlike conventional interceptors, which require a new missile for each engagement, a laser uses electrical power to generate the intercepting beam. 

But Rafael officials have said Iron Beam still requires adjustments before it becomes operational, according to Ynet.

Iron Beam Development Continues

Prior to the reported delays in bringing Iron Beam into full operational use, Israel has continued to advance the system’s development and integration.

In July, the Israel Missile Defense Organization and Rafael tested the integration of the Iron Dome with the Iron Beam laser during a series of trials against advanced threats, incorporating lessons from Israel’s recent conflict with Iran.

The integration could help reduce reliance on Iron Dome interceptors, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars per engagement.

Earlier, in August 2025, Elbit Systems began developing an airborne version of Iron Beam for the Israeli Air Force, building on Rafael’s ground-based system, which uses a 100- to 150-kilowatt solid-state laser to engage drones, rockets, and cruise missiles.
